They're not really surprised....they just pretend to be outraged at the suggestion.  

The good people in the religion know it's a problem and  they feel they can't stop it. The pathological in the religion feel it's moral to lie to the "infidels" in order to further their goals........cultural and religious domination achieved by killing all of the infidels. 

The PC police can't let reality into their bubble of perception....next they will try to convince us that allowing Sharia law into the United States is a religious freedom.

there are over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world and that number will rise to 2.2 billion by 2030. And there are what, a few hundred, a few thousand Muslim terrorists in the world? If you include the Taliban than that's 36,000 people, but even that is a tiny percentage of all Muslims (0.00000225 to be exact) . So yes, the majority of terrorists are Muslim, but the majority of Muslims are not terrorists. And that is why they might be surprised that you think any Muslim person on the street is a terrorist.

Just like many on the left they are naive of the truth.
That includes China, Russia, Cuba and anyone who like big government control.
Muslim leadership wants the total control and is using religion instead of a party.
The Muslims have two sects and soon they will be at full war with each other.

Did you forget in the early Roman Empire, Christians killed everyone who didn't believe in their religion. And lets not forget the crusades. Just about every religion had a form a terrorism in history.
