Why are my halogen bulbs heating up so much?

I have a track lighting system that uses halogen 120v 50w GU10 bulbs. The bulbs heat up to a point that has caused discoloration of the fixture itself and black marks on the ceiling behind each bulb. I am using the recommended bulbs. What could be the issue?

Halogen bulbs get hot, but they shouldn't discolor a fixture designed for halogen bulbs. Insufficient airflow near the fixture will cause ANY fixture to heat up more than normal.
