Why doesn't Los Angeles have a professional football team (NFL)?

I know all the major cities of the United States have a professional sports team (New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, etc.), but doesn't Los Angeles have one. They have a professional basketball and baseball team, but why don't they have a pro football team?

I'm confused.

    Chargers left

    Rams left

Raiders moved in and went back to Oakland

The teams that have been there, the Rams and the Raiders had trouble selling out even when they were good. I think there are so many distractions and opportunites for peoples entertainment down there that they have always had a hard time building a hard core football fan base. Why the NFL would not insist on having a team in a market that big is shocking to me, but what it will really take is a new, modern NFL stadium. Real Estate in L.A. is a killer... and a hard sellto the tax payers.

One of the biggest roadblocks has been a stadium. Nobody like to play or watch a game in the coliseum. It is so antiquated and the fans are so far away from the field. The other has been the lack of commitment from city officials. Now I bet we see a team there in the next 5 years. The Chargers or Rams could move back there. If things don't turn around in Jacksonville the Jags may be another option.

It's always something that eluded me.

Football is popular everywhere, it's surpassed baseball in this country and a major market like LA it would thrive in. USC sells out, UCLA sells out. The Rams left because they couldn't get a new stadium, the Coliseum held the Rams back from getting revenue from luxury boxes, etc. Al Davis thought he could get massive revenue by gaining the LA tv market, effectively getting a huge fanbase from LA to Oakland and capitalizing on that via pay per view. When that fell through, he couldn't get the new stadium and moved back to Oakland. It was about making money for him and he figured fans cared about the Raiders brand and not the city they played in. So it really had little to do with fans it had to do with a sub standard stadium, Al Davis' vision of a tv monopoly and non shared revenue.

They had the Chargers,Rams and Raiders but better support was found elsewhere. There is always talk of another team going there but until plans for a new stadium are approved ya can forget about any team moveing there.

They have had many proposals over the years for a stadium but for some reason or another they have all failed.

LA is a basketball city. Football just isn't that popular there.

They had one like three times. Rams, raiders and rams.

The people of LA didn't care

    You are dismissed
