LOL No. They spent all last autumn storing nuts for the winter. They have no idea where they stored them, so now they see a hole and think, "Did I leave one there?" They aren't as sophisticated as people think, but they're still annoying little tomato thieves. lol
Oh, and they do eat roots. They keep eating our squash and cucumber roots, so we stopped growing them. And, they killed a tiny fig tree by eating its root. Kind of why I don't like them, but it's your grass, so, even if they eat that root, you have enough grass not to worry about it.

Squirrels have been known to eat small birds, although it is not common for them to do so. It is probably digging thinking that another squirrel has buried a nut there. Possibly they may eat roots, even that is not common. Squirrels has been eating the bark off young pecan tree branches on my brother's trees. They can do a lot of damage that way. The squirrel is likely only wanting to rob another squirrel's stash.

Not sure if squirrels are carnivorous or not but don't think so. Never saw one eat worms and I have tons of squirrels in the area. They may just be using your hole to put nuts or seeds into for save keeping.
