What does this quote mean?

I like this, Alice, and I think it's true. For me it means wilderness allows you to experience life at its simplest. All the externals with which we live and cope in everyday life are left behind and you get a chance to contemplate who you really are and what meaning life has for you. It's the fundamental truth that gives our life meaning. It's the same thing that's sought by people who live a life apart from the world such as monks in monasteries. Personally, I've found the peace and the personal truth spoken of; the problem is I return to the world and am surrounded by the noise and frantic activity of everyone around me and I forget.
