Why is it that eventually there is a moral line that everyone recognizes you should not cross?

You can choose to accept that morality is subjective or relative, but if it is... then how come there's a line that everyone recognizes?

My friend is trying to argue that pornography is ok as long as everyone is consenting and getting paid... same with prostitution..

He says..."as long as they're all consenting adults, there's nothing wrong with it"

I challenge him and ask..

"What if the prostitute / actress is addicted to drugs and her easiest fix is the john... still ethical? nothing wrong with that?

He pauses... *No answer

I'm saying it's actually "wrong to do" not just my opinion about what's right or wrong to do... but making a truth claim that for some strange reason he can't object to...

Why is that?

Update:

((((Splash frog))) "Better" ?!?! you say? "Better" seems to appeal to an objective "right or wrong" in the matter.

Update 2:

(((Glutton)))) You admit there is "a fine line" that is crossed most often by "religious fanatics" I'm just curious how you argue it?

Really? I can answe the question you posed to your friend, easily. Yes, it's still ethical. Just as it would be ethical for that same addict to work washing dishes, or cars, or pouring concrete.

It is not unethical in the same way it would be if the addict were robbing or stealing to support their habit, right?

Unless we agree as a society, to treat addicts as medical victims of a disease, and to support them, we'll have drug addicts in the work force. Why do you feel performing sex acts is less moral than performing other types of work.

In short - Your question is a straw man. You ought to have said what you meant, which is that you believe sex is inherently immoral. And...you'd still be wrong.

Clearly your premise is false -- pick any moral "line" you want, and there will be thousands of humans that have "crossed it."

And yes, all "morals" are subjective. A fact clearly established by ample evidence.

A woman (or man) being addicted to drugs is still making their own choices about what's "easiest," and who are you to tell them the "easiest" way to make money is "morally wrong?" It's none of your business.

"I'm saying it's actually 'wrong to do'..."

And that's false. If you think it's "wrong," it's because you're deciding that based on some arbitrary standard -- yours or someone else's. And there have been thousands of human cultures where prostitution and drug use were common and not considered "wrong" at all (the Aztecs, for instance). And you're not making a "truth claim," you're stating your opinion.

This is more of a philosophical question. But anyways, the morality is entirely driven by the culture. Religious culture is also included in this. If the majority of a certain culture feels that prostitution in ANY form is perfectly fine, then this wouldn't even be a question.

A great example of this in the US culture is gay marriage. Just about 40-50 years ago, it was a crime to be homosexual. Nowadays, it's looked upon negatively to be discriminating homosexuality. See the difference? Culture changed as did the morals. Same goes with abortion.

    Hope this helps.

I don't know if there's an objective morality or not. I feel there is, but feelings can be deceptive.

However, if there is no ultimate basis for morality, then this seems to very much diminish one's concerns about moral issues - if it all boils down to subjectivity and opinion, then who really cares what's moral or not? All that one should be concerned about it doing the bare minimum to stay out of jail.

You are all over the place here. One pause does not an atheist consensus make.

There is no "line". It IS subjective, and it is a line I find religious fanatics cross far more often than most normal people do.

As for the porn actor raising funds to facilitate a habit, they are adults. maybe we should just legalize drugs already and take out the stigma of seeking help. The prohibition of them is one of Christendom's bigger disasters.

Hey, if a person has an addiction, they will do anything to feed it.

I'm not saying it's right, or wrong, but there are better options than substance abuse.

Maybe, but we don't all agree exactly where the line is.
