Help building a mtg deck?

I've been playing mtg since about tenth edition. Im pretty good at it, but I don't have very good deck building skills. Im 16 now so for the first couple years I didn't even think about 60 card decks or strategy. My older brother who has only been playing for a couple of months has a better deck than me. If someone could give me help other than link me to a website because for some reason they don't help me. I could give out a list of my rares/mythics and someone could give me a good idea for a deck to build around one of them and throw in more than 60 just in case I don't have some of them.     The MTGSalvation website has a great forum where people will critique your deck. You'll have a lot more luck there than on Y/A. http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/

    If you've been playing since tenth edition you have been playing since you were ten years old. Maybe you were too young to start playing so your skills didn't grow properly. Who knows. You're better off finding local people to give you some advice, and playtest, playtest, playtest any decks you build. That's how you learn.

    Ok so....i only have a few things to say

    1. find the color synergy

    2.lay yourself out 20 lands (for a 60 card deck) and put 40 other cards in there

    good way to think of building a deck is statistics.

    I have won tournaments in the past but these simple questions you can ask yourself while building a deck will help to make your deck work more smoothly.

    1. What is my primary win condition? and your secondary win condition?

    2. What colors do I plan to use?

    3. What cards do I need on the opening hand?

    4. what cards will accelerate me to my primary win condition?

    5. what cards will block my opponent from ruining my win condition?

    In highly competitive play most decks win between 2-8 turns on average unless they are meant to stall, wall or are counter based. that means that most games you will use about 9- 15 cards of your deck which is using 1/6 to 1/5 of all the cards in your deck.

    So basically you need to think how cheap is my primary cards and combo in the deck and by what turn is it possible to use each card in my deck.

    I suggest when building a deck arrange all the cards you might want to use by mana cost from left to right. Now seperate creatures from all other cards so you have 2 rows of cards arranged in columns by mana cost. now you have a good sense of in your head that on turn 1, I can put down one land and play any card with mana cost of 1.

    Now ask yourself which cards in your cost 1 pile would you actually want to use on your first turn. since some cards are much better to play later in the game. then go back to the questions from above. do these cards help me to get to win condition, setting up combo or stopping opponent from messing up your win condition.

    the idea about lands is that depending on how cheap or expensive the mana costs are overall in your deck you want to make sure that you can draw enough fast enough according to the turns of the game and what you need. in a mono colored deck if most cards are cost 4 or less mana and dont have many mana effects to use on field the cards you can run safely about 12- 16 lands. lands are useless if you draw too many and you have no way to use them otherwise they just reduce the number of playable cards in the 60 you can draw and also may play cards you need to hold onto to fast. too little lands and run into your deck becoming not focused towards your primary win condition and playing slower paced.

    Go back to statistics again. if you have 15 lands that is 1/4 of your deck is land meaning that 1 out of every 4 cards you draw is going to be a land. opening hand you should play if you have 2 lands.

    going back to your arrangement of cards go back to ratios. on turn 1 i can play 1 land and all these cards. by turn 2 i can play my second land and this percentage of cards in my deck total. by turn 3 or 4 you have drawn 10-12 cards by now. here is where statistics and ratios come in. by now you drew 3 lands which 3 out of the 12 cards you drew or = 1/4. without extra effects you could have played a combination of about 10 mana used by this turn. 12-3 = 9 cards you could be using by turn 4. that means you need to set up the cards that you can be using on each turn to meet the ratio at which you can and want to play them.

    so important to run doubles triples and quadruples of a card. since most games you only use about 1/4th of your deck you want to make sure cards you depend on will turn up in that time so having 4 of a kind really helps. it also helps if you can find cards that have very similar jobs and use those to increase your odds of drawing that card to help you reach your primary win condition. you can then use this kind of math and logic to increase your odds even further so that you are making a 60 card deck that is as predictable as possible. that way when you shuffle you have a very good idea and turn by turn strategy to set your combo up and win condition.

    cards that search, draw, counter your opponent or help with mana production early game can lead to a much smoother victory.
