Merchant marine question?
I realize to be an officer in the merchant marine you must graduate from a maritime academy. Would you get a good rank if you went to a normal college and obtained a degree in marine or ocean engineering?

You still have to work your way through the ranks. Depending on the ship and trade it will go from junior officer to 3rd mate, 2nd mate, chief officer/ 1st mate and finally Master. It is the same in the engineering dept. Theses comments also takes for granted that you have the necessary certificates of competency for the rank you serve in.
Promotion is by seniority and by proof of your ability to carry out the duties involved in your rank.
My own personal view has always been that it does not matter where you come from but your ability to carry out your duties. As a master I do like to be able to sleep peacefully in my bed at night without worrying about the officer on duty.
