Why do people in this section often fail to pluralize the word "atheist"?

i.e. "atheist are the biggest hypocrites" (not my quote; I'm an atheist myself)

I've wondered that myself, darling... about that and about the widespread inability to spell the word "atheist" correctly.

Seriously...it's not that difficult, but more often than not, questions addressed to us are phrased like "Athiest, why do u not believe?" I always want to just answer with something like "what's an athiest, and which specific one were you addressing," but on the few occasions I've done so, it seemed to go right over their heads.

I've sometimes responded by explaining about plurals and pointing out that the word "athiest" means that something is the most "athy" ("athie"?), whatever that is, but on those occasions, I've been dismissed as a grammar Nazi...so I rarely try anymore.

I'm convinced that some do it from ignorance, or a simple lack of writing skills, while others do it as a kind of insult or as a marker that they're trolling.

Because they use the word "atheist" as a pejorative adjective, not as a plural noun.

I admit that "atheist" doesn't fall under the fingers very well, but I don't get it either. There's a spell checker right there ---> for those who write "athiest" but nothing can help you with poor grammar.

    *puzzles*.

I've been going on the assumption that such grammatical errors are a sign that the person is intentionally trolling for satirical purposes.

Hard to tell why. Laziness? Diminished mental capacity? Home-schooling? It's a mystery.

Got me. Why do so many people fail to pluralize 'moose' or 'deer'?

    Slip [sic] of the finger.

'Cause they don't really understand what an atheist is.

To do so would admit there's more than one!
