Why does the news media exaggerate things and lie to people?

Last night, American media outlets were reporting that "91" people had been killed in tornadoes in Oklahoma, and that the number "was set to rise." That caused a lot of anguish amongst people with friends and relatives in the tornado area.

But then today, the media admitted that its reporters lied, and the actual confirmed death toll from the coroner's office (which they should have waited for to begin with before throwing numbers around) was only 24. Still bad, but MUCH better than 91 and rising.

Why does the news media exaggerate things and lie to people so much?

This isn't the first time, either - the New York Post reported a few weeks ago that "12" people had been killed in the Boston bombings (the final number was three). They reported that "up to 50,000" people died in the collapse of the World Trade Centers (the death toll in the towers minus the Pentagon was 2,606). They said that 10,000 drowned in Hurricane Katrina (total deaths from the storm were around 1,800).

Why does the media do this so often?

Sensationalism. CNN is often guilty of it.

They've often released false or premature information.

    They really suck.

The media thinks the public wants instant answers and some small segment do want that but until the search is over or all the facts are in,going to have to expect mistakes...remember Benghazi?

It's all about ratings and market share for the media.

More people will watch and be "concerned" if there are more deaths or tragedies involved, they do it for more viewers and "entertainment", honestly.

If a huge bomb went off and killed one person, it wouldn't be anything important compared to a bomb going off and killing 50 people. They love to exaggerate.

They weren't lying. They were reporting what the medical examiner stated.
