Is the injury and subsequent shoulder surgery a potential career ending scenario for Andre Ward?

Joe Calzaghe built a career off a damaged Jeff Lacy, how serious is the possibility that Ward is now damaged goods with only his name and previous record to sell? I am a huge fan of Andre Ward, I ran into him at the Dirrell/Abraham fight and he seems like a greqt kid, but if his injury has limited his ability, what effect will it have on his career?

Update:

Doc. The Fact is Jeff Lacy wasn't anywhere near the same fighter after his shoulder surgery and Joe Calzaghe took advantage of a damaged name fighter. After the Lacy fight, Joe's career skyrocketed. Is the same possibility on the table for another fighter with a damaged Andre Ward?

Man I really hope Ward isn't damaged goods. He's a great young talent, a good guy, and the sport needs him. If he is however, it will be a huge blow to his career and a fighter could make a name of his name, but I'm not gonna say that Calzaghe built his career off a damaged Lacy. Lacy was considered the next big thing in boxing and was even being compared by some (not me) as a 168 lb version of Mike Tyson. Lacy sure didn't appear injured beforehand as he was destroying guys. I just think he ran into a brilliant Calzaghe who beat him soundly and he was never the same. Calzaghe also went on to beat a darnn good fighter in Mikkel Kessler, who was unbeaten at the time.

    Super middleweight world

champion Andre Ward underwent successful surgery

to repair a small tear in his

    right shoulder capsule this past

    Friday, his publicist Julie

    Goldsticker informed

    CSNBayArea.com. Dr. Michael Dillingham, who

    was the 49ers' team physician

for 25 years and is renowned

for his work with Joe Montana

and Jerry Rice, conducted the surgery with the assistance of

    partners Dr. Ken Akizuki, the

    Giants' current orthopedist,

    and Dr. Joe Donahue, team

    physician for Santa Clara

University Athletics. The operation occurred at the SOAR

Surgicenter in Burlingame. Ward will now rehabilitate his

    shoulder with physical

    therapist Lisa Giannone at

    Active Care in San Francisco.

    Giannone once helped Rice

recover from a potentially career-threatening knee injury

    and oversaw Robert Guerrero's

    comeback from shoulder

surgery in 2012. A native son of Oakland, Ward

    (NorCal No. 1; 26-0, 14 KOs)

was slated to defend his title

    against Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34

KOs), but the fight has been

shelved indefinitely. According to Ward's promoter Dan

    Goossen, "S.O.G." will be out

for at least four to five

months. "I think that when I get back,

    the super middleweight

    division, and, even possibly

    the light heavyweight division

    is going to be more

appetizing," Ward told Ring Magazine's Lem Satterfield.

    "There could be some potential

fights right on the table as

soon as I come back, so it

could be a good thing from

    that standpoint."

Could be, yeah. A lot of fighters ended up being a shadow of themselves after a serious injury or surgery. It's more psychological, I guess.

We will have to wait and see, but any injury of this type is always potentially an end of your career.
