Best spray paint for a stain effect?

I made a guitar stand for my friends birthday and decided to spray paint it instead of staining it. Now thats its all painted, i hate it. So i was wondering how i might be able to get the look of stain with another type of paint, or any other suggestions of what might look good.

No, you can't really stain over paint.

The whole point of staining is that it soaks into the wood and is translucent, and the grain and characteristics of the wood shines through.

You're not going to get a stained wood look unless you strip it, sand it down & stain it properly.

Alternately you could do a faux wood paint job over the old paint, however this will not be something you can achieve with spray paint-- it would take brush work. But a wood rocker tool and tinted glaze will give you the stained wood look. This would require about as much work as stripping it, though.
