feigning humility - that's why people thank a god for their own accomplishments. It has become more socially acceptable to do so. Other wise, one might sound "arrogant"
Imagine working really hard at something...becoming really good at it.....then claiming the credit. For some reason, most of society resents that.

They thank God for giving them the skill at that moment. They may well ask God why when they fail.

Why do people blame God when bad things happen when the Bible says that God never causes them to happen?

They aren't being rational. Just ignore it. It's just a meaningless ritual.
They don't mean any harm though.
I just ignore it.
