Why is God three different things?
The trinity. I thought there was just one God. When Jesus talks to god, is he talking to himself? If he's the son of God, wouldn't that make him a separate, possibly less or equal power God? Is the holy spirit a sentient being or a kind of God magic spell?

As many have mentioned numerous times before, the trinity of the Godhead can be compared to water. Water is the same compound in either liquid, gas(steam) or solid(ice). God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit of God are the 3 ways God chooses to reveal Himself to us. We use the Bible as our benchmark of what we understand about God. Jesus is equal in every sense to God the Father in heaven (Colossians 1, John 14- 16, Hebrews 1:1-3). The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus Christ (John 15) and is equal also to God as the Father is or Jesus. You have to refer to God's Word and not our own finite human understanding if you want to know the truth about Him.

Either this is a good question, or another attempt to troll. LoL! But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. I try to answer as many questions as I can around here and get people pointed in the right direction. Most of the time I focus on the serious things in “religion and spirituality” like doctrine. For example, I am very concerned with Christians who have yet to open their eyes on subjects like the Trinity and Eternal Hellfire. I mean, who doesn’t want to know the truth about God? Or their afterlife (or lack thereof?) LoL! Anyways, I am rambling, I’ll just follow the community guidelines and share some sources with you that have been helpful for others as well. Good luck and God bless,

As I understand it, the three are part of the God. Like the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit together form the great being.

I thought there was just one God. Well, Jesus thought the same thing.
Jesus plainly stated that he was more than a good man. He said: “I am God’s Son.” (John 10:36) Of course, anyone could claim to be the Son of God. But if Jesus’ claim were false, what would that make him? Really, not a good man, but a great fraud!
The most reliable testimony came from God himself. He twice said concerning Jesus: “This is my Son.” (Matthew 3:17; 17:5)
Just think: The Scriptures report only a few occasions when God’s own voice was heard on earth yet on two of them he affirmed Jesus as his Son! This is by far the best proof that Jesus was who he said he was.
Jesus never claimed to be God, but he repeatedly spoke of himself as “God’s Son.” Even his enemies acknowledged this. (John 10:36; 19:7)
Jesus was ever conscious of exalting the Father and subordinating himself to Him, as he confessed: “The Son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative, but only what he beholds the Father doing.
For whatever things that One does, these things the Son also does in like manner. I cannot do a single thing of my own initiative because I seek, not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.”
Again, he said: “I am a representative from him, and that One sent me forth.” He also said: “From God I came forth and am here.”
Jesus never even suggested that he was God or was equal to him. So to teach such a thing dishonors Jesus.
“When the writers of the New Testament speak of God they mean the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When they speak of Jesus Christ, they do not speak of him, nor do they think of him as God. He is God’s Christ, God’s Son, God’s Wisdom, God’s Word.

Clerics can't answer your question because the Trinity is an illogical concept. That is why in the end the Trinity believers just sigh and insist that it is a "mystery." If you REALLY think about it (that is, using your brains properly), you would conclude that this invention called the "Trinity" and just about everything that makes up Christian dogma and doctrine is patently absurd.

There are three distinct & different Persons in only ONE God (Divine Nature). If you are qualified use your search engine herein on this internet for St Thomas Aquinas for the Summa Theologica contra Gentiles Book 4.

God is just one God. The parts make up the whole. The father, The son and the Holy Spirit. Those are the parts that make up the whole.

There is one God, in three persons.
The same way that you are in three parts, body, soul, and spirit.
