I smoked cigarettes for one year.. could i reverse the damage done?

I smoked cigarettes from my senior year of highschool to most of my fresh year of college. I quit about 41 days ago and i want to know if i can reverse the damage done or if I'm still going to be in trouble down the road with cancer and other complications.

The human body is amazing and can bounce back from damage from smoking, but it only works if you don't smoke and didn't smoke for too long, like you. Also, your body has a lot of time to bounce back so I would say yes. I'm not sure about cancer but it doesnt sound like you did a ton of damage in the first place.

The damage caused from smoking can be reversed if you quit as long as the damage is not too extensive. It has been said that it takes five years on average for your lungs to be back to normal. In your case you were only smoking for 3 years. I don't think you have any irreversable damage you should be ok. Now don't start back up... I quit for five years after smoking for 10 and I felt like I never smoked a day in my life! Then I thought I just could smoke one cigarette and after I did it was like I never quit. That was 10 years ago! Do yourself a favor and don't try it again you will be fine!

If you can maintain your smoke-free life, the good news is that your lungs will heal and you'll be at the same risk for cancer and other bad things as people who never smoked.

Congratulations on quitting before you did serious damage to yourself. You smell better too. :)

Statistically, you will be no more or less likely to develop serious lung issues or cancer than someone who never smoked so long as you remain smoke free. :) Your lungs will fully recover.
