There are plenty of non insipid vampire stories.
I would do anything by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, who has a great series about a 5000 year old blood sucker named St, Germain. I would start with "The Palace":

The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnes

Of course the Sookie Stackhouse series upon which True Blood is based, starting with Dead Until Dark

And the Gabriella Doria series, with Dark Sanction

Bram Stoker's "Dracula".
"Cirque du Freak" (both the movie and the books, which are by Darren Shan, by the way).
I have not actually vampire-related novels. However, I have seen many vampire movies and programmes. I have also read vampire short stories and I will often spend a great deal of time looking about vampires and answering questions about them on here.

Dracula. The sort of origin of vampire stories. You might find some of the language a bit dense, but it's actually pretty good- and creepy.
