Marines assigned to US Navy ships?
On the USS New York's website it lists the crew as being 360 Sailor and 3 Marines. What are the three Marines for? Please no guessing.

Combat Cargo Officer and some of his guys I'd say (I know 'phibs have one of the former, and I'd guess he has assistants). They are part of ship's complement (as opposed to embarked Marines) and act as liaisons from the USMC to the ship itself to help coordinate and plan unit onload/offload issues and equipment problems.
