Wireless router people can u help with hook up?

I have never hooked a router up and would like to go wireless with my laptop. Can someone help me? My question may seem absurd, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I have a 3 year old laptop that has wireless capabilities, but I've always used my cable modem. I purchased a Netgear G router awhile back, but could never get it hooked up properly so it sits in my closet brand new.

Absurd question ---Can I hook this router up to my cable modem and connect to the wireless signal with my laptop?? This is the part I don't understand, but would like to accomplish.

Isn't my laptop still connected to the router during setup? Do I disconnect my laptop from the router after setup and then connect wirelessly? I know this sounds crazy, but I'm not really understanding.

Wireless router people, pls help and explain this procedure. Everybody seems to get it, but me. Feel free to message me if you need to, I'd actually appreciate it. I only have 1 pc and need portability of a wireless connection. THANK U!!!!!!

Aaahhh... I see.. No prob, the question is very clear! :D

    1. Grab your router. Feed it the power.

    2. So usually, you just plug in directly to your laptop right? So unplug that, and plug it in-in the back of the router, usually labeled as 'internet'

    3. Then, grab a LAN cable. Not sure if blue or white, that contained in your router packaging. Or else, buy a new one. It's pretty damn cheap.

    4. Then at the back of the router, you should see other ports, for pc. Choose any ports and plug it in. After that, plug another end to the laptop.

    5. Boot up your laptop. Go to a browser, chrome, mozilla or whatever.

    6. Then, in the address bar, (where you usually put urls like www.google.com), insert 192.168.1.1 then press enter. That is most likely the default ip of the router. Notice there are some dots between the numbers.

    7. Wait it to load and ask you the username and password. By default, it is

    Username: admin

PWD: admin or sometimes its blank(blank means you don't need to put in anything) Then hit enter.

    8. You'll find complicated stuff in there. Just browse somewhere named wireless, then wireless security, then you can put in your desired password, and basic wireless settings for network name. Well, that's for me not sure for you that won't be exactly the same lol.

    9. You can now save the settings, and unplug the LAN cable. Note that anytime you need to change your password protection and wireless name, it's recommended to plug in the lan cable to your laptop and do step 6 through 8. And the last....

    10. GO WIRELESS! ENJOY!
