Am I expecting too much ?
I recently approached a music store to buy a guitar, with genuine intention to buy that day and asked if it was brand new boxed and not in the showroom being used and abused by all and sundry. The price was almost £1000.
I was told it was on display and another not for sale for a week , despite it being in stock, they would not consider any discount off the RRP, even though it was used as a demo.
Am I expecting too much from the store? I was told if I did not buy it someone else would and effectively take it or leave it, the money was in my pocket, but I though bollox if I am paying full retail I want a brand new, unmarked one. Am I being unreasonable.
Ralf-the new ones were in stock but if I wanted brand new I would have to wait until they were ready to unpack it.
OU812- strangely when I buy a new car I expect it to be new not the dealers ex-demo which they always discount because of that fact!
I am fascinated by your comment that I should be ashamed of asking for a discount for soiled goods, not showing my face in the store again etc.
They had the new one boxed etc in stock, but tried to sell me a shop soiled one at full retail price, which is their prerogative, but commercial suicide, they have 100% mark up at the makers RRP, the goods were not in the same condition as new, having being tried by people with no intention of buying or respect for it's condition.
It's their decision not to give me say10% discount and keep 90%, instead they chose to reject 100% of my money and drive me into the arms of their competition, who then just look after me sell me a brand new instrument, thereafter they have a customer for life!
As yet I have never been in a car showroom where anyone can choose a new car, jump in it, unsupervised, without prov

No, you're not being unreasonable but did you ask to speak to the Manager or Owner?
You could well have had a deal - or not.
I feel very sorry for independent retailers - they're there for anyone wanting an internet purchase to abuse by viewing the goods, getting a talk through the product and then more often than not people don't even ask if they can have a bit of discount - they just walk off.
High street retailers pay huge rents, huge business rates and have all the health and safety red tape etc and employment law to contend with - they have to make a decent profit or go bankrupt.
The forecast is that 60% of our high street shops will no longer be there in ten years.
Where will people go to examine quality and gain expertise then - Amazon?

You are not being unreasonable at all , sounds like they have a cheek to me , my son bought an ex display bed and got a big discount
It is ex display you should get a discount as it is practically second hand , they will put a nice brand new one in its place , buy online or demand a 20% discount
I always ask for Discount in shops even when its not ex display and is perfect , its amazing how often they say yes , friends and family take me shopping because I am a good haggler

No. You have certain expectations for the quality of the product you were about to buy and they didn't meet the criteria.
I think you were right to put the money back in your pocket.
Edit. I just have to answer OU812, the 'demo' at a dealership is always sold cheaper. And maybe of it were a reputable music shop with a high turnover I might agree that every guitar gets played before being bought. But reality dictates that goods on display get shop soiled.
Any shop owner worthy of this trade allows for this kind of shrinkage in the pricing system.
And in reply to another Answerer regarding Amazon and the death of the High Street- The Answerer is absolutely right!

I think the least you could expect from spending so much on a new guitar is for you to open the box and to be left feeling like it's the best one you've played and the best one you've seen. I have bought 2 guitars, one second hand from eBay and one brand new from the German, Thomann website. Neither of them cost more than £150 but with the brand new one, I still had expectations despite the price. It was brand new, unmarked, no finger prints, strings still brand new. If I had bought one similar from my local music shop, I know it would have been used by the tech guy to set it up and I know I would never have got it for such a low price.
I don't want to, but I think things are going the way of buying online instead of locally. Unfortunately.

No, I had a similar experience in Currys/PC World with a TV I wanted to buy, I was told the model I wanted was out of stock, but the manager of the store was willing to sell me the display model and because it had a tiny mark on the case he discounted it by £100, and I duly bought the TV .I think you did the right thing and you should take your custom elsewhere

All guitars in any shop are hanging on the wall for people to try, these are not "demos" and should not be discounted in any way. Seriously, I wouldn't want to show my face in that store after asking them for a discount. I mean you may be new to music, but you made a total *** of yourself. That's like going to a car lot and asking for a discount on a new car because someone had test driven it before. So yes, you are being unreasonable and you made an idiot of yourself to the folks in the store. Sorry, not trying to be mean...just telling it like it is.

Find another stockist that is prepared to be more reasonable. And they wonder why the high street is dying!

no the shop were quite right, why should they sell at a discount a line they are being resupplied with, they'd only have to use a new unit to replace the one you bought.. bad economic sense.. god wouldn't make you head of ici, why didn't you order a new unit when they came in..

You were absolutely correct.
Why are they closing down all over the place.
Hardly a mystery is it ?
