a question about El Centro?

In the mid 60's I was a British Merchant Seaman and jumped ship in LA with a couple of friends. We ended up in a detention centre in El Centro which I have been trying to find on Google Maps.

I know it was somewhere near the airbase because we saw planes flying over all day, but the only thing like a detention centre seems to be the State Prison, would that have been it?

Update:

East Side Guz - Many thanks for your trouble. It seems that the buildings are no longer there but that's no surprise as it was 1966 I was there.

It used to look like the German prison of war camp in the Great Escape with long huts, wire fences and a gun turret. There were about 500 Mexicans, 2 Canadians and 3 of us, I was 16 at the time.

Again thanks for the info.

No, it is not a state prison, it's actually called the Imperial County jail. I went there sometime in 2011 with my wife to visit her son, who was picked up by the Border Patrol and transfered here from Arizona. You can see that it is on Clark Road, not Imperial Avenue (Highway 86) as most of the websites describe. We went east on Interstate 8 from San Diego over the rocky hills to Clark Road, turned right heading south past McCabe Road to Applestille Road, which is like a long private driveway, turned right again all the way to the end, and then turned left to the end of the parking lot, near the chained link fence and "registered" with the ICE police to call our names to visit her son about 6 pm. It must have been summertime, with all the cow flies in

the air. I left another link that looks like a typed letter, full of information you can use.

You can also come from the north on highway 111/86 from the Salton Sea and Indio,

if you're closer to Los Angeles county and avoid all the rocky hills...
