Is it normal to have swollen and tender gums after a dental cleaning?

On Thursday of this week I went to the dentist for my yearly check-up and during this visit my teeth were examined and cleaned. I didn't have any tartar on my teeth prior to them being cleaned and my x-rays showed no signs of cavities. Once the cleaning was done my dentist said that I had some very very light bleeding but overall, my teeth and gums were in pretty good shape! A few hours after leaving the dentist my mouth felt a little sore and my gums felt slightly tender and swollen which I had attributed to the cleaning however, it is three days later now and my gums are still tender and swollen should I be alarmed or is this completely normal as I have never experienced this after having my teeth cleaned? Your help is greatly appreciated thanks a bunch!

This is absolutely normal. You might want to gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water, that can help. Of course, if this keeps up for another week, then call the dentist to be sure this is fine. I think your gums are just reacting to the cleaning.
