Drummers: Does My 5 Year Old Daughter Need a Junior Size Drum Kit or a Standard Size?
My daughter is 5 years old. She is quite advanced; reads at a 5th grade level and is learning Mandarin. She has expressed interest in music, specifically the drums. I am a guitarist and do not know where to begin when it comes to purchase an instrument.

If she is five she definitely needs a standard kit. You should buy one that is a good fit for her let her try it out first in the store. Hope this helps

She should get a standard kit probably. You can get some cheap ones for her to practice on at any pawn shop or something. There's no senses in getting a five year a high end end kit if she won't like it in a year or two down the road. Take her out to a couple a places and see what fits her and what she likes. You could even check kijiji for some. As for cymbals,go out and get a starter pack. They'll last for her. It comes usually with a crash and the two high hat cymbals.

She'll need a standard kit, but try taking her to a music store to try them. Not only can they help get what she needs, but if she tries them in the store she may change her mind about playing them and you'll have saved all the money. Really bright youngsters often imagine themselves doing things that, once experienced, no longer hold an interest. It's the "Oh, it THAT all it is?" syndrome.
