How do you get a children's book published?

Just finished writing a children's book with a friend. It will be marketed toward 5 - 8 year olds. We do not have illustrations. I have read that we should NOT attempt to have somebody do them (unless they are a professional illustrator. I also read that we really need an agent - and if we try to deal directly with the publishers it is highly unlikely they will talk to us or read our book. Just asking if you agree. Should we find an agent? (and if so - HOW?) - and should we leave the illustrations to be done once the book is picked up by a publisher? Thanks.

There is a book which probably resides on the shelf of your local library, entitled The Writers Markets.

It lists some 3,000 publishers, breaks them down by genre, and gives you all the information you need about submitting manuscripts.

Some publishers want agents, others are happy to deal directly with authors.

Some children's book publishers have staff artists, others are happy to deal with work submitted by the author.

Why not loot at Writers Markets, pick out a couple of interesting publishers from the children's picture book genre and send them a query letter. If your book is fairly short (as it should be for this genre) you could even send a copy of the text. INCLUDE A STAMPED SELF ADDRESSED ENVELOPE WITH YOUR QUERY. You'll never get a response otherwise. If the publisher is interested, you can then go on to discuss illustrators etc.

    good luck with it

Draw the pictures yourself. It save a lot of time on your behalf. When you're done with that, get it self-published. There are some really good self-publishers out there, and I even know someone who did it for her novel. I'd also set up a website if I were you, and get the word out. If all goes well, you can sell it on Amazon and hopefully to actual bookstores. You may even get signed with a new publisher and they'll republish it for you.

    Good luck!

Publishing a guide is effortless in this day and age with the arrival of online publishing, self publishing and digital publishing. Have you learnt that the youngest writer used to be 4 years old? With the proper steering, perspective and of course, book in hand - you might be simply in your option to becoming the following bestseller. :) I say excellent good fortune! :)
