virtual reality like S.A.O (Sword Art Online)?

is it possible in the future ( our lifetime ) that "virtual reality" like in S.A.O (Sword Art Online) could be possible? where you control the action with ur brain without moving ur body like in S.A.O and where it feels like your actually INSIDE the game where u can smeel things, talk, feel things, and that ure movements will become second nature to u? and if it IS possible then when do u think that something like that could be released?

It's completely possible that it could happen eventually. I'm a huge fan of SAO, and it really got me thinking if virtual reality is possible. It even got me back into playing MMORPG's.

Obviously at the moment we don't that the technology, but we're making progress. Just look at the Oculus Rift or Google Glass. The Glass responds well to voice commands and the Rift can track your eye and head movements when playing a game, directly transmitting them onto your eyes for awesome 3D.

The only problem is that we don't fully understand how the brain works. Heck, we don't even understand how the nose works yet.

Once we get some insight on how the electronic signals in the brain work and exactly which does which we might be able to safely develop some sort of technology to intercept that and to send false signals, so maybe to tell the brain that it can taste something, hear something etc.

Maybe if that was hooked up to the internet you could communicate with others who are close to you on a virtual plane.

I think it is completely possible, but for now we're stuck with sending real signals to our brains through the eyes that have just been falsely generated.

There's no way we're going to have the technology any time soon, but it is COMPLETELY possible. After all if our brain can sense this reality through nothing more than the chemicals that can be found in the human body, surely we can make a fake one with our advanced technology.

    EDIT!

I thought I should point out that while you're waiting for more SAO, there is another anime, Accel World that is made by the same people and set in the same universe as SAO, just further in the future (you can tell in episode 22).

It's also set in a virtual world but the punishment for dying there is not nearly as harsh as death. Very good anime, I suggest you have a look.

    ^-^ Hope this helps! ^-^

Actually, I think the tech in SAO wasn't 100% relying on sending virtual signals to the brain but simply simulating the situations in much the same way as the rift does (as far as visual feedback)

If you pay attention to the headsets as they log in and out, they appear to be showing the video feed of the world in the head set and everything else is simply adding further to the tech. The sounds could easily be set to fool your ears and block out outside sound, the sights could use a type of high def projector and reflective vizor with some light canceling tech to make outside light much less intrusive. The only real trick was the neural interceptors at the base of the neck. With some serious research, even this could become possible. The VRs in the show were also implied to be relatively new tech developed pretty much for the game SAO as it was made by the same company and person. Seeing as how the show was set in the 2023-2025 era, it seems only a little implausible for new tech of that nature to be coming out for the people really willing to back it up and pay for it. In ten years, I'm willing to bet that the rift VR head set will be old news and everyone will be excited about the newer system that may be coming out featuring limited mind control features like we see with the Iphone's X-wave or that speculation about Nintendo working on a 16 point mind reading head set that detects brain waves and such I've seen in a few online articles. While we probably won't have nerve gear by the time 2023 rolls around, if there are enough backers and excitement around it, I'm pretty sure something close to it will be available by around 2040 or so.

Considering that people are getting predicted to live longer and longer in areas with regularly updating medical tech and research, it's safe to say hitting that 130 years of age isn't so implausible anymore so you might not even have to worry if you'll be 70 when this stuff comes around, just focus on saving up a pretty penny and try not to let politics and nay sayers doom this technology before it even gets a chance to shine.

We managed to make Oculus Rift and make the gameplay even more realistic. That means they found some way to do this beause its not like Yeah let me put in 2 Glasses in there and its done. No its complicated and you guys are right the brain is still a question we don't know how it excatly works which nervos moves the hand or the finger which part of it. If we want a Virtual Reality FULL DIVE Experince we need to find every single point of the Brain, thats because if they create a Helmet like in S.A.O they will probably put million of little nano chips everywhere in the helmet to let you control your whole body in the Virtual Reality. However, i think with our technology today and how FAST we managed to get all of this stuff we will be able to play in Virtual Reality soon. Its not like they will need 40 Years to do something like that. No we needed that time before because we didn't know anything. We had to find all of this out and finally we got there with High Tech Systems and this will help us to make a Virtual Reality Full Dive System im pretty sure about that. We will be able to see the world of Virtual Reality. I don't think they will take like 40 Years to find out how to do this because look at this World we managed to do Touch Screens we managed to build so much things. There is even something new in the Medic if you lose an Arm it can be recreated by some sort of stuff but it takes time like 1 Year to fully recreate that Arm and that medic is expensive like 100.000$. If we start something on Kick Starter and we show the other People S.A.O maybe they will be fascinated by that like us and they help us with Kick Starter the Project of making Virtual Reality FULL DIVE System will start even way faster and they will work a lot more on it and maybe in 5-10 or even maybe 20 Years we will have our full dive virtual reality system.

Accel World It's Just SAO And It's Made By The Same People Who Created SAO. In The Anime It's Acctually In The Future After Nerve Gear Was Created. Another Anime like SAO is Guilty Crown For Some Reason It Reminded Me of Sao A little

Sword Art Online Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (SAO VRMMORPG)

The questions in everyone's mind is, "Is virtual reality like SAO possible? When will it be made?"

Well to answer your questions, yes it is possible and depending on how fast we work, it will be made sometime within the next five years.

Why five years? Who is 'we'? How is it possible?

My colleagues and I are currently working on this device. We have most of the details worked out; where the signals come from, what paths they take and where they end up while traveling throughout your body and mind to control all the senses and movement.

So far, we have taste (the challenging one), smell, touch, sight done. We almost have hearing, memory and speaking worked out.

In other words, yes it is being worked on currently but it will still take time and money.

    All the 'Greats' start young.

Please do not ask any questions for they will not be answered (by me). No details of our progress will be public.

Mostly all we need to do is figure out how dreams work because in Sword Art Online, your body doesn't move, its like a sleep mode, also our brain still works withen sleeping so it is like a video game but adding teh Oculus Rift you can be in a game but not with any system besides a "cartridge" built inside like in SAO also magnecticly connecting the wires of the system with your own brain waves. By doing that will get you more ahead to building a virtual reality inside of using a game system like the Xbox with the Rift, the Rift only amplufies the screen not physicaly making you be in the game, its only making you think that, you dont have a body in the game like Call of Duty, it needs to go 3D before making a real virtual game like SAO

Yet we do not know how the brain works yet, there is technology out there that can block signals in the brain to keep it from performing certain functions like adding numbers or speaking a sentence. The only problem is that this technology is expensive and scientists would have to find a way to take these signals in the brain and send false signals into the virtual reality while also keeping the body in reality from performing these actions.

    So yes it is possible.

Believe it or not progress is being made now scientists have found out how to induce dreams through electrical signals to the brain. The study was posted back in 2014. If they can control it directly we might see something like SAO somewhere in the next 10 years. Just like the timeline of the show oddly

Only issue is that there is a huge risk for subliminal manipulation of you mind through these signals Think about it. There will be a direct link to your subconscious mind :(

But besides that I love to see this tech. You would never suffer from sleep deprivation because basically your body would be at rest

Okay, so to add some actual clarity to this, we are far from any such thing. The US and UK military are the two closest to understanding VR; however, it's not how it seems. They have human-sized spheres that one can climb into and train in a "VR". What one would see is in 3D, but the person inside would also have to move their body to actually move in the "VR".

This person would also not be able to smell, feel, or taste anything inside of the sphere. They could only hear because there are speakers built into the sphere.

We understand very little about the human brain and in order to create a true VR, we would have to understand what every nerve in the brain does and what signals it sends to what body parts. To accomplish such a feat would require nearly a century of non-stop study of the brain with our current technology.

However, as the human race evolves, so does it's technology, so if you consider this, the VR technology is possible to see in the lifetime of a 20 year old, but by then they would probably be about 80 years old.

So yes, theoretically it is possible, but the technology just isn't there. No matter what any one says: don't get your hopes up. We simply do not have the time or resources to put such technology to useless things such as gaming. It would much better be used for helping the blind, deaf, and dumb.
