Isaac Newton is the guy we give credit for discovering gravity. The story is that he was sitting under an apple tree and he saw an apple fall, and he said 'Hey! There's GRAVITY!' In some versions of the story, the apple fell on his head.
But it wasn't like that. Since ancient times, people had believed that the planets and stars were moved by the invisible hand of God. They believed that the planets moved around the earth in perfectly circular orbits, that the universe was like a big clock, and that proved there was a 'clockmaker'.
But in the 1500s people began discovering stuff, mostly through the new invention of the telescope. First they figured out that the planets go around the sun, not the earth. Then they found that the orbits of the planets were not circular but elliptical, and that they traveled at different speeds in different parts of their orbits. Johannes Kepler spent years trying to figure out why God would move planets like this!
It was Newton that figured it out. The planets moved because of nothing more complicated than gravity. They behaved as 'falling bodies'. He proved it with mathematics! This was a discover that 'changed everything'! It showed that the 'natural law', the laws of physics we observed on earth, were the same throughout the universe! That was a real shock! It led to a whole new view of 'nature', to the rise of something they called at the time 'natural philosophy', which today we call -science-. it showed that we can learn more about the universe through experiment and observation than through scriptures and other ancient writings. Newton touched off an explosion of science and technology that continues to this day!
People in those days were so marinated in religion that they tried to find an explanation for everything that had to do with God and angels. Newton himself said 'God waited 3000 years for man to understand his invention'!
So anyway, nature's laws lay in night, and then when Newton came, there was light! 'Night' and 'light' are metaphors for ignorance (or the traditional way of thinking) and knowledge or understanding.

Seems to me it is attributing the modern discovery of scientific laws to Isaac Newton.
