I just cut my finger with a dirty old stanley knife blade, can I treat it on my own?

I just gashed my finger quite deeply with a blade that tend to use for sharpening pencils, oil pastels, as well as cutting through tin cans etc (I'm an artist). It's not very clean visually, but I don't know if it's got bastieria or infection on it. Anyway the cut was bleeding a lot, I've cleaned it and put teatree oil on it and now its got a band aid on it too, the bleeding has subsided more or less completely now i think. The cut had swollen a little bit and looked bruised sort of. Do you think I should go to a doctor or will it just heal by itself now?

Thanks for any adivce!

    Hello!

Yes. You should go to the doctor or even the hospital. Since it's a deep cut and it was gushing blood for a second, you might have hit an artery or a group of capillaries. And especially because you said it was a dirty art sharpener, your cut is 2x as prone to infection as if it were a clean blade. Go to the hospital even if it's not bleeding and they'll stitch it up and clean it. You might get a 'cast' for your finger!

    Best of luck,

Disinfect it with some kind of antibacterial liquid. You should do this fast so you can't get a sepsis.
