Rome travelling questions?

Ok so I'm going to Rome on a school trip and I'd really like to visit the Vatican, my hotel is hotel portamaggiore. And the Distance each way to and from the Vatican is 3.5 miles/5.5km now there are quite a few school restrictions and really I wouldn't be allowed to do this but I'd want to see the Vatican (I'm not Christian or anything just whist I'm there kind of thing). So firstly walking fast would take me about 2 hours which I think is to long cause I've got to be quick so teachers don't notice etc. I've seen the ATAC bike share system that looks like I could do but I need to get Smart card etc which seems a bit complicated. What about trains? Any details?

To go anywhere on are own we're meant to be in groups of 4 but that's not really that important. Btw I'm 14 male and healthy. Any suggestions are welcome remember I can't spend a load or anything thanks in advance.

    Honestly......some people here..........geeshhhhhhhh.

Okay, Rome has an extensive and very easy to use subway system that will take you virtually anywhere you want to go. The nearest stop to the Vatican is a few blocks away, but easily walkable.

To go thru the Vatican MUSEUM tour, you need a ticket, about £14 euro , I believe.......if I remember correctly.......and you get to walk thru the musuem part, and see countless treasures and works of art.

This tours, ends in the Sistine Chapel, and then you are herded out, and deposited literally right in front of St. Peters, which is the CHURCH. Entrance to the church is FREE, but depending on functions and things taking place..........not ALWAYS accessible.......but usually.

To enter St Peters appropiate dress is required. No shorts, no flip flops, no tank tops. Use to be no sneakers, but they eased up on that. For girls, no bare shoulders, no short shorts, bascially, dress for church, and not the beach.

These days, they have done away with the endless long lines of yesteryear.......and you need an advance ticket, with DAY and TIME you will be allowed in to the Museum tour. BUTTTTTT, if you just walk up to the window, and they can squeeze you in, they will gladly sell you a ticket. Worth a shot. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Be sure to ask about the Vatican DOME tour.......you get to climb up the cuppola of the Vatican and that is really quite something......if you can squeeze that in . Good Luck.

Hotel Portamaggiore is close to Roma Termini station. From there, several transportation options exist - taxis, metro, bus, but I would highly recommend that you don't leave your group and go off on your own at 14. Getting in trouble with you teachers would be one of the best outcomes of that. There isn't a quick way to get there and back even only seeing the outside which you almost certainly will see at some point during your stay. Try and arrange a group during your free time if you really want to go there and it isn't covered in your tour. You should also let your teachers know where you want to go.

I just can't believe - I REALLY can't believe - that you are going on a school trip to Rome and not visiting the Vatican. I'd suggest checking your itinerary or asking your teacher or both before you get all into this. EVERY tour to Rome goes to the Vatican.

No, I've been to the Vatican, and unless you can get in and see the art treasures - which are worth BILLIONS, and then there are third-world Catholic countries where children are prostituting themselves for food, nice one that, very Christian - unless you can get in past the mile-long queue of people to see the art treasures, the Vatican is not worth bothering with.

The ancient ruins, on the other hand, are very interesting.
