Why is the default language of Wikipedia Esperanto?

Are they trying to crush their credibility even more?

What would make Esperanto such a bad choice?

Do you consider English the "best language"?

Esperanto as Wikipedia's default language would be great, since W. is an independent project, and E. is an independent language.

    When I go to:

    http://www.wikipedia.org/

I see a globe made up of puzzle pieces surrounded by languages you can select with English at top left and Espanol top right and no mention of Esperanto. Beneath is a search box and beside it a drop down to select the language and the selected language is English.

When asking "Why X?", it might pay to ensure that X is true. It appears not to be.

But that aside I have no idea how language choice, default language or whatever can affect credibility. My choice as web designer would be to detect the region of your IP address and offer a default language tailored for that dynamically. Not sure what Wikpedia have done. The code on the home page is perhaps dynamically generated in just such a manner and perhaps your IP is in Esperantio ;-).

I don't think this is about to happen, but if it was the case :

-If they can crush their credibility the same way google and facebook did, why not.

-Esperanto is among the 5% most spoken languages in the world, in over 120 countries.

-It could bypass the overrated debate which occurred so many times in the past already to determine whether the "working" or "official" or "most heavy-balled" language should be English, French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Arabic, Latin, and so on…

In case the language still looks like a joke to you, at least show respect to its thousands of natives and to the 6000+ languages with less speakers than Esperanto.

How did you determine that Esperanto is the default language of Wikipedia? Their English article about the wiki itself states: "The coexistence of multilingual content on Wikipedia is made possible by Unicode, whose support was first introduced into Wikipedia in January 2002 by Brion Vibber after he had similarly implemented the alphabet of Esperanto".

So this would mean that "unicode" is actually the default language of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia's English edition is located at en.wikipedia.org (https://en.wikipedia.org/ ) and similarly, Esperanto edition is at eo.wikipedia.org (https://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/ ). It looks like you have accidentally gone to the latter.

Or if you are talking about the language used in the interface after you login, then you might have selected Esperanto as your default language in user Preferences of your account (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences )
