Connective tissue disorder?

I'm 17..and my mother just told me that she has been diagnosed with Connective Tissue Disorder. She's going on 50 this fall..she won't tell me anything more, but I need to know what it is. I've read up on it, but I still can't make sense of it all. She needs to see her doctor for "more info" and she hasn't told me which one she has. I read that it could lead to lupus, and some other things..I'm scared beyond normal because I just lost a friend like 2 weeks ago and I'm not ready to go to another funeral. Especially my own mother's. I just want to know:

life expectancy?

Curable?

Can you live a normal life with it?

Will you forever have pain?

Can quitting smoking help tremendously with her health?

Will she forget me?

Will she heal??

Please go into great detail, making it as simple as possible. I'd like to k is what's going on with my mom so that I can help her and cope better.

Connective tissue disorder is a diagnosis given when the doctor does not have enough evidence for a diagnosis of lupus. She may develop lupus or she may not develop lupus. No one can tell.

She can expect to have a normal life span. These conditions have periods of activity when you might have some pain, and periods of calm. They are totally unpredictable. There is no cure, but doctors can help manage these conditions.

Your mom knows smoking is bad. She does not need to hear that from you as you try to "fix" her health.

She is not telling you much because there is not much to tell. You can;t help her cope, she has to do that for herself. What you CAN do is help reduce stress in her life as it relates to you. I am sure she is trying to make sure you don't worry.

Bottom line, it's not that serious. Let the doctors do their work

I am 61. I have lupus. I have had it since I was 13. I take my medication and manage my stress. I have 3 jobs and lead a full life. When I was diagnosed in 2003, the lupus affected multiple organs. Now it is under control. www.lupusflorida.org
