sit spin position question?

I'm hoping to start working on sit spins this next year or so, and am starting to practice the position off-ice. This is a really dumb question, but why do figure skaters seem to lean really far forward when they go into the sit spin position, rather than being straight up and down? Is it a strength and balance issue, or what?

Your weight needs to be forward otherwise you'll go on your heel and fall on your butt. How much you have to lean depends on your physique. When you do start attempting them try not to hunch down though, i.e. bend at the waist but keep your back straight.

Think about where the weight is in your foot when you try the position next time. Once you do, you'll understand. A hunched-forward sit has the weight precisely where it needs to be - through the ball of your foot, square over the rocker.

A straight up and down sit has the weight over the heel. I'll leave you to guess what'd happen if you did that on ice. It's not a hard answer.
