HaSatan isn't exactly "evil" is/was he?
Is there a reason why Christians evolved this character into the evil 'being' it is today?
That wasn't the question. If I ever ask, "Hey, is 'the devil' real?" That will be your chance to shine.

Actually a complex question. The Christian concept of satan is different from the earlier Jewish and even earlier nomadic concept. It could be argued the early church saw a well defined satan, as something to fear, an identifiable enemy, and most importantly a reason for the masses to seek 'shelter' in the church. Of course this could have been the accepted thought of the time but coincidentally it also served to bring more people to the church as there only protection from this evil and the potential of eternal damnation.
The history of satan is well worth the time looking into. Of course stay in the light, help others avoid suffering, be compassionate, but don't be afraid to learn.

Correct! Or at least, it would be most accurate to say that in Judaism, evil is a part of god's plan as much as good. He created both; the idea that there could be rebel angels, that anyone could oppose god's will, is a heresy for Jews. It's likely that the Christian idea of Satan came from Enoch, a book from old testament times which is rejected by most Jewish authorities, exactly because it does talk about fallen angels.
