I don't buy meat substitutes anymore, because I don't really miss them, and I can make my own if I want to. But when my children were at home, they loved the frozen veggie burgers and chicken patties and the packaged veggie dogs. I don't know where you're located, but Trader Joe's has some good meat substitutes. Their frozen corn dogs are really good.

Healthy? Meh, not as good for you as real food, but better for you (and the animals and the planet) than animal flesh.

  • I haven't found a really good veggie dog, although Tofurkey makes some pretty good vegan sausages.

Gardein also makes an excellent line of vegan "meat" substitutes based on soy, plus wheat and other grains. Their Beefless burger is the best veggie burger I've had. And I like their Chipotle Lime Tenders.

There's a company called Beyond Meat that makes "chicken" strips, but I haven't tried them yet.

As for healthy, well, they're all processed foods, so you don't want to eat them all the time. But they're probably a lot better than actual meat.

    I like Yves.

They are very tasty. They are healthier than meat (less fat, no cholesterol, etc.), but still not a "health food" by any means. Eat them as a treat once in a while.

    You're not going to last.

Every person I ever knew who lasted as a vegetarian didn't like meat to begin with. Vegetarian meats never taste like real meats, at best they take like poor meats with a lot of filler.

I think the best ones are ones with heavy seasoning such as Morningstar bratwursts.

No, they're not healthy. Read their labels. Lots of salt and chemicals.

Plus most of them are produced by companies that mainly sell meat and cheese products. So by eating them, you're financially supporting the meat and dairy industry. Might as well eat the meat
