Urgent Help with sweet itch horse feeds!?
Okay so I've fed my horse loads of different feeds, happy hoof, different types of chaff ect, but my horse has sweet itch quite badly, so I need a feed to mix up ll his garlic and other sweet itch supplements, I have given up on the feed I was using as he is already full of energy, and it was just giving him more, so I need a feed that's, low in energy, in the lower price range and doesn't make him gain weight.
I have no clue if this is true or not but someone told me you can get sweet itch feed or something?
Also does anyone know any other way to help sweet itch, or any shampoos to help them stop itching as he has itched off his main, and his tail awful! I already know about garlic power in feed, marmite sandwiches, keep his fly rug on at night, and I use strong fly spray, I have those naff off things in his stable, and use something called ITCH GONE LOTION, does anyone know if this works, as I have not seen any change with his itching, I know I'm asking alot, but I will be very appreciative with any answer ! Thank you!!

Unfortunately you have no rights to take the horses - regardless of how bad a condition they are in. Its a job for the RSPCA/Police - and for now you have done all you can. If the RSPCA have left another notice - you could perhaps contact the owners again and offer to take on the horses - if they quote a price you can always respond that they are in very bad condition, and the vets/farriers bills to get them back to good health will be substantial. See where that gets you? Keep on at the RSPCA. Keep a log of the horses condition from whenever you visit - take a digital camera and make sure the pictures have that time/date stamp on them. If you are collecting evidence it'll help the RSPCA case fro removal if and when it comes to it. Its not an immediate fix to the problem - but good for you keeping an eye on these horses - they obviously dont have anyone else looking out fro them!! The legal process is slow - and usually int eh favour of the owner. But keep at it! All the best.

I luckily have never had to deal with sweet itch. I would talk to your local feed mill and design a custom blend feed. Use corn for a base. Most sweet feeds use oats and oats make a horse hot. corn is better for weight. Custom grain will also be cheaper by the pound than the store brands. You should compare prices of having the mineral and garlic mixed in or if you should add later, Our new mill is double the price of buying it separate at a store. If you have no feed mills near you look for a corn based feed or at Equine Senior feeds.
Good luck with his mane and tail.
