Why does my tape keep stopping playback?
My cassette player on my home stereo plays a tape for a while and then all of a sudden stops. When I eject, I inspect the tape and consistantly, about 1 inch of tape has unraveled and is just loose and floppy. I wind it back tight, put it back into the cassette player and continue playing. It has done this about 3 times per side on 2 different tapes. Anyone have any ideas if something needs to be calibrated?

The cassette deck / recorder unit requires new belts. By nature, rubber belts deteriorate over time, and stretch - at which point the belt needs to be replaced. This is a complex, labor intensive repair and will be costly to fix.
If this is a stand-alone cassette deck, you are money ahead replacing it with one that is still in working order. If it is part of a compact or bookshelf system, and that system has an auxiliary input - add a working cassette player to the system.
