How to survive a long flight as a smoker?
I'm going to New York soon and the flight is going to be 9-10 hours. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for the fact that I'm a heavy smoker. I smoke about 2 packs per day (crazy I know) and I'll get harsh withdrawal symptoms just being an hour without a cigarette. 10 hours is a nightmare.
Is there anything I could do? I don't know how much patches will help...
Thanks

I have been there. Here are a few things i have learned from experience.
1. I prefer gum to patches as it is a more active way of getting nicotine.
2. Even heavy smokers go several hours every night without a cigarette. Try to fall asleep as soon as you can.
3. I find cravings are worst when you are almost able to smoke. Since that is not the case on the 10 hour flight, I don't find the cravings as bad as if I am stuck in a meeting and always thinking I am 10 minutes from a cigarette. Maybe it is part of 'not thinking about it"

It depends what you're smoking. Tobacco is a lot more dangerous to the individual than marijuana is, for example. If you're talking about tabacco cigarettes, then there are a ton of bad things. 1) Stroke risk increased 2) Heart attack risk increased 3) Lung, gum, tongue, throat, etc... cancer risk increased 4) Emphysema risk increased 5) Asthma like symptoms 6) Weakening of the respiratory system in general 7) Bad breath and odor 8) Rotting/Decay/Staining of the teeth 9) And more.

Get some nicotine gum. It will give you some nicotine. It will also help with your ears popping. It will also help take your mind off needing to smoke. You may also want to consider taking a nap. Maybe take some Tylenol pm and use it to fall asleep.
Make sure you have plenty to do so you're not bored.

Should have quit and gone on the patch the day you made the travel plans. Start the patch now.

Get your doc to prescribe a nicotrol inhaler. They are a lot better than patches, and there's no vapor. The only downside is you need a scrip.

chew the gum? There is no smoking at all, on the plane and if any equipment is tampered with, the authorities may be called.
