Why do dogs hate Postmen?

I am a postman and have trouble with dogs being aggressive when I am delivering the mail and have been bitten.

I know dogs are territorial but does anyone have any tips on how to calm an aggressive dog down?

See it from the dogs view, Normaly every day a strange intruder invades the familys territory, shoves something threw the door. The dog barks to ward off this intruder and what do you know the intruder leaves to invade next door instead. The dog thinks it has driven off the intruder and that in itself is a reward so the dog carries on doing it.

The best way to avoid getting bitten is simply to not go in if there is a lose dog in the garden, iv seen on tv people have had there mail stopped by royal mail for dogs acting aggressively in there front gardens.

If you find yourself in a garden with a lose dog avoid eye contact, avoid sudden movements and slowly move towards the exit. May be worth taking a bag of dog treats with you so you can drop the treats to distract the dogs.

Hi I have 2 dogs and they bark like mad when a postman comes past and even when I come home so here is what I do

    Never show fear

Have a strong tone of voice

Maybe carry round some treats to calm them down

    Try telling them to sit

If the the dog jumps up at you turn around from them

Shout excuse me or hello to the owner they might calm down the dogs

Remember don't be scared most dogs just want to know who or what you are and if any dogs have bitten you in the past they are only protecting there home or owner because they might mistake you for a burglar or intruder

    Hope I've helped !!

My dogs hate the letters that come through the door - and will often run upstairs with the letters/newspapers and eat them. I think it's the noise of the letterbox that terrifies them. Maybe you could leave the letters outside - a trick of my regular postman if he hears them pounding down the stairs.

They are nice to the postman though.

you can look at it from their point of view.... stranger shows up at their door..... they bark and that person goes away. SCORE!

Next day.... stranger shows up, they bark and stranger leaves again!!

Day after day, same thing happens. They just learn the pattern to make that person go away again.

I know you don't have the time to learn each dog on a daily basis, but if you could get to know the

owners and the dogs over time, then maybe you will know who to treat and who to watch out for.

My postman use to treat my dogs and my dogs learned to sit and wait for their treat. Also, ask the dog to sit before you give the treat....always good to teach manners as you treat :) You can even find out what the commands work for each dog.... ie "be nice" or "easy"

NEVER give dogs treats unless you have the owner's permission. Some dogs have severe allergies to certain foods and treats....

As for your question, this is a good explanation: http://suite101.com/article/why-does-my-dog-hate-t...

If a dog is aggressive, your best bet is to skip delivering mail to that house. It's not worth risking a bite--both you and the dog's owner will suffer sad consequences. If the owner wants his mail delivered, he'll have to learn to keep his dog confined.

I know it's not good to treat dogs behaving badly, but you don't exactly have time to train all of them so I'd suggest doing what my postman lady (I don't have a clue what you call them) does and bringing smelly treats to hand to them as soon as they approach you. My dogs love her now and they don't usually like people in uniform either. If the owners don't want you feeding them, just the smell of the treats could get them to behave for you.

I don't think spraying other people's dogs in the face is a very good idea, you could get into even more trouble if the owners disagree.

Something to do with the postman entering their territory, I guess. My dog barks at him every single morning, even when he's delivering mail to our neighbours.

If you’re thinking you want to start training your dog properly, but aren’t sure how, then you’re in the right place. Learn more https://tr.im/am6Cw

The thing about proper dog training is that the more you know, the more you can use towards training your dog. If you have gotten a new dog or puppy, you should work on training them right away. If they are going to be indoor dogs, you can start crate training them . This prevents bathroom accidents or your items being chewed on. Start off with the right sized crate, so that they have enough room in the crate to move around a bit.

If you are trying to crate train your dog or puppy you must understand that you can not expect them to be able to hold their bladders for extremely long periods. You must provide times for them to go to the bathroom. They don’t want to go in their special place. So it is up to you to take care of them. If they have a accident don’t get mad at them, it wasn’t their fault it was yours.

When teaching your dog discipline, regardless of what training method you use, you should always apply it with speed and consistency. Not correcting your dog for bad behavior every single time, sends him mixed signals that may only make the problem worse. Likewise, not correcting your dog immediately, may make it hard for him to understand why you are punishing him.

Thats just a stereotype Not all dogs hate postmen. But try not reacting to them and dont pay them any attention. When you go to deliver mail be calm because dogs will feed off of your energy.

Dogs don't usually "hate" the postman, but think about it from the dog's point of view. You have a "stranger" who comes up to the front door of his house, invades his "territory" without an invitation, makes a noize at the door, then sneaks away without a by-your-leave. Of course the dog sees this person as an intruder! If your postman/woman is willing, why not try introducing your post-person to the dog so that the dog knows that this person has been "invited" and is a friend.
