Is Brazil a safe place for tourist to visit?

Someone told me that crimes in Brazil is extremely high, especially kidnapping, ransom, robbery, assault, and other criminal activity. I've always wanted to visit Rio De Janeiro but I'm not sure if I want to go there anymore. I was also told that American tourists are easy targets of getting robbed by criminals. I don't understand how a nice beautiful city has alot of criminal activities, Rio is a nice place to visit but I rethinking my visit over there. Can you help me? Thanks!

P.S I'm taking Spanish soon so if I speak Spanish to someone who speaks Portuguese, will they understand me? My school doesn't offer Portuguese.

Update:

Half of these answers are positive, but half are not. I'm so scared to visit Brazil now, I'm not even joking!!

My fiance is Brazilian and I have visited on several occasions and have not experienced any real problems, but then I do have a native with me as a guide and interpreter.

Rio is a big city so take the same precautions as in any big American city, no large amounts of cash, no flashy expensive jewelry, be wary of pickpockets etc, you know the drill. And you may want to remain in the touristy areas where it is well lit and plenty of people around. I do have to say that the vast majority are great people, not sure if they will fully understand Spanish but the two languages are very similar. You may find it difficult to find people who speak English but there usually some in the hotels who could possibly advise you about where to go and what to see.

Of course Copacabana and other beaches have their attractions but be aware if you are there in the height of the summer (which is our winter) it will be very hot, sunscreen is a definite must. You really have to take the opportunity to visit Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer and maybe take a bus tour to see other attractions around the city.

So I hope you do take he trip to Rio, and if you do have a great time down there.

I can tell from this question and the others that you've asked that you are NEW to YA and that you are incredibly young and naive so my advice is to go with your gut and stay home.

I don't know where you live - some small town in the US I assume - but the closest large city to your peaceful suburban life is very similar to life in Rio de Janeiro. The difference is there is a massive population with only about 10-20% being considered "wealthy". The remaining 80-90% would be considered poor by any world standard you choose to impose. Whenever you mix a massive population of "haves" and "have nots" you are going to get disparity and the resulting crime. I'm not sure who "told" you that American tourists are easy targets is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY off base. Any nation's tourists are actually less than desirable targets because even the criminals know that Rio's reputation is fragile and with the impending World Cup and Olympic Games, maintaining that status quo is incredibly important to the lives of too many Cariocas. The guy who may think mugging is the answer to his poverty issues also has a mother that cleans rooms at a hotel in Copacabana and relies on tourists to keep her employed and food for his baby brother.

My point is this - Rio is a city with its problems just like any other city in the world. No more, no less. Did you recently read about the young Indian woman in New Delhi that was gang raped on a public bus by 5 Indian men and then subsequently died? The media likes a story that captures your attention be it good or bad for the reputation of the given city. If you are smart and act like someone that knows what he's doing, then you too can have an amazing adventure in Rio. Just like the 2 million annual tourists that do the exact same thing without incident.

Brazilians do not speak Spanish. They may certainly understand it but if you speak Spanish to them they may very well ignore you because they think you are assuming they speak Spanish simply because you are in South America. Buy a phrase book and practice some easy sentences in Portuguese and when that doesn't work, speak English. The last thing you want to do is insult a Brazilian on your very first visit to THEIR country.

With its bright sandy beaches, rising hills and picturesque harbour, it's no wonder that Rio de Janeiro is called the "cidade maravilhosa", or marvellous town and with hotelbye you can take the possibility and visit this excellent city. Rio de Janeiro is facing the South Atlantic coast and may be the second-largest city in Brazil. This town is blessed with one of the most wonderful organic options for a metropolis in the world. The dazzling landscape is just one of the reason why that readers chose Rio de Janeiro. During carnival year, a event that everyone else noticed, the streets load with music and ornately costumed performers getting tourists from all around the globe.

    Hi John =D.

Yes, Brazil is a safe place for tourist, and Rio de Janeiro is an amazing place, but you have to take care there. Unfortunately, most people in Brazil don't speak English, ( but in airports, hotels, restaurants they speak English ), but if you speak Spanish, they'll understand you because it's very similiar to Portuguese.

Hope I helped you ^^. See you.

Help Brazil! Do not come to

    the Confederations Cup,

    World Cup and Olympics!

  • Be extremely careful!!!!!!!!!!!

Spanish is not understood there. NEVER speak Spanish in a Lusophone country. The Portuguese hate being spoken to in Spanish, especially if you aren't a native Spanish speaker. The Brazilians are nearly all monolingual in Portuguese, and their pronunciation is so different than that of Portugal (which is closer to Spanish that Brazilian, but is still in a different ballpark) that Spanish is hard for them to understand.

Sure, I mean, there are a lot of crimes but it's not like that, I live here during all my life and I never was assaulted or something... Depends a lot the place where you'll go too. But the people here are really friendly and there are a lot of beautiful cities, beautiful beaches, a lot of cool things to do! Well, I understand Spanish but I can't talk... But a lot of brazilians speak English and Spanish, they will understand you!
