What kind of salt water fish can I put in a 36 gallon?
I have a soon to be empty 36 gallon bow front freshwater tank, I'm going to move my fish to my 55 gallon, and I'm hoping to turn the 36g into a saltwater reef tank.
I really have no idea how a reef tank works, but I have a filter that sits on the back outside, it's for 30-55 gallon tank abd its aquenon brand. Would that work on salt water?
I'll tackle light and substrate later on, I'm just curious now about my fish options since my tank isn't very big. I love shrimp/crab like things, clown fish, mandarin fish, but I don't know the requirements for any of them.
Fish ideas? Favorite salt water fish for smaller tanks? Suggestions? Similar experiences? Thanks in advance!! :D

You would do a lot better to have the 55 for a reef. In a 36 your limited to about 4 peaceful fish that don't get any bigger than 3 to 4 inches. Look at gobies, small wrasses, dwarf angels, clowns, and chromis. Also take a log at watchman goby and pistol shrimp pairs.
You can have a mandarine or any other dragonet. They need 75 lbs of live rock and a productive refugium. Otherwise they will starve to death.

no, you do not have the proper equipment for a reef tank
you will need specialized lights, more pumps or water circulating pumps, maybe a protein skimmer, new substrate/coral sand or gravel
your filter is a piece of crap by the way, but reef tanks don't utilize the same kind of filtration, and rely mostly on live rock and tons of water flow, so it will be ok as supplemental flow.
your tank isn't big enough for more than a couple fish, and not appropriate for most of the saltwater fish.
mandarins never survive in tanks that aren't well established or have a refugium.
but yes, it's possible to do a nano reef tank, research that term for more info.
