Driving a large amp with a small amp?

This is hardly a new concept. Dave Davies of the Kinks was doing this in 1964;(see guitargeek dot com)

But, I don't know the details. The picture shows a 10 watt (Elpico 1x10 combo) with a cable running from it's speaker output into a VoxAC30 at, I assume, the guitar input?

How would one match the load (4,8,16 ohms?), that is which load are you most concerned with -output/input/both, and is the cable running to the guitar input?

Thanks.

To TommyMC:

Every time I've heard of this kind of set up it's always mentioned in the context of using the smaller amp as a pre-amp.

In spite of the block diagram shown there, he couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't have connected a speaker output from the Elipco into the Vox. We know from his description that he slit the Elipco speaker with a razor to get the distortion. This means that he had it turned up enough to be heard....and that much signal going into the Vox would fry the input.

I'm going to make an educated guess that he customized the Elipco by tapping into the circuitry before the power stage and created a custom "Line out" from the preamp. He could safely run that into the guitar input on the Vox.

No matter how *he* did it, if you want to try this with your own gear, make sure the small amp has a "line out" or "headphone/record out". Connect this output to the guitar input of the larger amp.
