Is the NFL racist when it comes to Quarterbacks?
There's many great NFL quality QB's out there from african american descent who should have jobs in the league but no teams are giving them a chance while Caucasian quarterbacks like John Skelton, Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn and Ryan Lindley (QB rating of 46.7) all have NFL jobs. When other QB's who are proven winners like Vince Young, Byron Leftwitch, and Charlie Batch all don't have jobs. Just take a look at these Quarterbacks and tell me why they don't have jobs in the NFL why those other ones do.
Byron Leftwitch: 58 touchdowns 42 INT's 10,532 passing yards 78.9 QB rating. 2x AFC Champion 1x Super bowl.
Charlie Batch: 61 touchdowns 52 INT's 11,082 passing yards 77.2 QB rating. 3x AFC Champion 2x Super Bowl Champion. "Whizzer" White NFL man of the year award. 637 rushing yards 6 touchdowns.
Vince Young: 58 total touchdowns 51 INT's 8,964 passing yards. 74.4 QB rating. 1,459 rushing yards. 2x pro bowler. Rookie of the year. 31-19 record as a starter.
While some of these other QB's who somehow have a job when they really shouldn't.
Brady Quinn: 12 touchdowns 17 Interceptions 3,043 passing yards 4 different NFL teams have given him a chance. 64.4 QB rating.
John Skelton: 15 touchdowns 25 Interceptions 3,707 passing yards 63 QB rating
Ryan Lindley: 0 touchdowns 7 Interceptions 752 passing yards 46.7 QB rating
Ryan Mallet: QB rating: 5.2
Is this just a coincidence or something more? Sorry but I think NFL teams are becoming a little racist when it comes to picking up certain Quarterbacks. Even look at coaches they fire Lovie Smith for a no namer from the CFL. Lovie is a proven winner but it seems even the Roony Rule doesn't help. I feel they should make a rule with Quarterbacks saying you must bring in at least 2 Quarterbacks from the minority descent for a try-out with the team at QB. What do you think obviously these stats do not lie.
@lornoth okay then how come Jerrod Johnson, Troy Smith, and JaMarcus Russell also don't have jobs. They all have so much potential and there all under 30.
Also Josh Portis, but about Tebow at least he used to win games but now he's just a joke. Tyler Thigpen has been awful the last time I saw him play last pre-season I think he had like 1 touchdown and 5 turnovers in 3 games.

Batch is too old and lack throwing power, Young could be worth a shot, but I have a few FA QB's ahead of him. Leftwich has a very slow release, and hardly any upside. Skelton has very little upside, and I would take Batch over him. Lindley is perhaps the worst QB I've ever seen play in an NFL game, several non QB's would make better QB's than him. Quinn has hardly any upside, why a team would want him I can't see, Mallet is mostly a big unknown, and has good upside, I see why he is on a roster. Troy Smith is about equal to Quinn, I'd take him for the upside though, Jerrod Johnson has good enough upside that he should be on a roster this time a year. Russell's upside is also to good to pass up, and he is an upgrade over both Skelton and Lindley from day one.
How would my shortlist FA QB list look right now -
1 - Tyler Thigpen
2 - Jamarcus Russell
3 - Jerrod Johnson
I can think all these 3 guys are better than a lot of players that are on rosters in the NFL.
Why no Tebow on the list?
@AD's - John Skelton had a really good record in 2011, better than Tebow if I remember correctly.

It is true that over 80% of NFL QB's are White, a number that is decreasing. VY got his chance, and was a major headache for every HC that no one wanted to take a chance on him. Leftwich got old, and has a job as Roethlisberger's backup. I think African Americans do get their as fair a chance as Starting Quarterbacks in the NFL. Russell, Smith and Johnson have started a game, didn't cut it as a legit Starting QB. Also, Quinn, Skelton and Lindley have as well

I'm Black.
African American.
Colored if you like and a few other words some might choose to use at any given moment.
I said that to give you the idea that I'm not biased in favor of or against people who are Black just because I wear the Georgia avatar.
Don't want you to assume as so many have that I have a racial agenda that mimics some of the history of the state of Georgia.
Your list includes old (Charlie Batch), washed/used up (Byron Leftwich), basket cases (JaMarcus Russell/Vince Young) who were given the opportunity to explode on the scene and make both money and notoriety in the sport and for the most part they threw it away or were replaced due to injury/wear and tear.
Now for some reason you imply that people wont give them a chance because they're Black.
I'm sure there are some left in the game who take issue with Black quarterbacks but the game for the most part still takes the best of the best who perform nightly so I don't think your statement is completely correct.
Are there racist people in the NFL?
Hell yes!
This includes Players/NFL personnel and Fans.
And people of African decent can be and are just as racist as anyone else.
We're all racist ... most of us are able to control it reasonably well.
Source(s): There ended the lesson. I see that someone disagrees with me ... that's OK cause we're all important :) - Anonymous8 years ago
nope it all comes to the coaching and what type of offense said QB used in the university level. to be a credible starter in the NFL said player has to be a pocket QB with strong arm strength and accuracy. as you have seen the past 3 years the NCAA glory boy Tim Tebow isn't exactly getting a warm welcome when it comes to being a starter in the NFL.....it is clear he is a running QB who played in a system that is ONLY successful in the college ranks.
and speaking of failures in the NFL take a look at all of the USC Trojan QBs that got drafted in the 1st round to the NFL the past 10 years or so.....one is a clipboard jockey, one is getting torn a new one in NEW YORK, and the Bungles can't win games.

Right and the fact all three are 30 or over and on their way down isn't part of it at all. They may have been good or even great 5-10 years ago but now I certainly wouldn't want them. Look at their games the last few years, not throughout their career, and you will see.

Are you really arguing for Johnson, Smith, and JAMARCUS RUSSELL??? You see, this is why the race card is rediculous! It gets to the point where people think everything is about race and can't see the fact that those players either sucked really badly or had tons of excess baggage that drug the team.

No that is dumb. If you want to win games then bring in good players. If you want to be racist and not get good players then that's on you. The last thing we need these days is a rule about skin color. Ya they may be racist but no, you don't need to be making skin color based rules...shits awkward when you only there because of a rule.

Black QB's aren't uncommon at the collegiate level, there in lies the problem. There's far too many lopsided NCAA games due to recruiting monopolies, so when some awkward looking black player who really should be playing Corner ends up playing QB "for the added athleticism", who wouldn't suck?
Troy Smith was a good example of this, the Buckeyes were bottom feeders and made the BCS anyway. You can't be a brute QB in the NFL, not when you're expected to facilitate an offense.
edit: Look it's Spidey being PC for the sake of someone else's self-esteem. Half that list would be anatomically impossible..

No, the NFL is not racist, when it comes to quarterbacks. Robert Griffin III is proof of that.
For me, the bigger concern is the fact that colleges are sexist when it comes to quarterbacks. This is evidenced by the fact that Matt Barkley was able to keep his scholarship to play college football at USC, despite throwing only 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions during his senior year of high school at Mater Dei.
Four years later, Sami Logan leads Centennial High School to a 6-1 record as starting quarterback, with 5 playoff wins, and a runner-up finish in the CIF State Football Championship (something Barkley never did during his 4 years as starting quarterback at Mater Dei.) Yet, her road to signing a Letter of Intent to play college football at USC was much more difficult than Barkley's.

I notice that you skipped right over the Niners dumping Alex Smith for Colin Kaepernick.
