How to catch a rat without killing it?
Yeah I'm not big on poisoning animals or breaking their necks with traps or having them exterminated etc. My young American STB sniffed out a rat this morning (which everyone knew was in the garden and knew they were supposed to keep the back door shut!) behind one of the bookshelves and sure enough, as soon as she barked at it, it scampered out of its hiding place, across the kitchen and into the next room to hide behind the washing machine. I've blocked the only exit to this room to prevent it from roaming the house and possibly wandering into the jaws of my Staffy - who's still looking for it. I don't have any rat traps to hand (or those cages that capture them without killing them) for obvious reasons and I'm not going to poison it. How best to go about capturing it? I have a pet carrier (used for guinea pigs) to hand which I contemplated putting food in to lure it out and catch it in but any other bright ideas?
Do NOT just say that the only way to get rid of it is to kill it or put poison down. Not doing it. Nope. I'd rather release it at the lakes nearby and let it carry on living there (probably to become food for a fox or something).
Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy a trap right now, so that's not an option.

Maybe try a glue trap? It's sticky and you would have to clean it's feet but it wouldn't kill it. Other than that all I can think of is setting out food and catching it yourself. Be careful as rats do bite. Pet carrier or anything with a lid would contain it. Always make sure to leave ventilation holes in boxes and plastic containers.

without buying a humane trap, catching them will be tricky.
but you know what you could try that would be free?
do you know anyone with pet rats, or have a pet shop near you? if so, ask if next time they clean out they can save you a bit of used litter (doesn't have to be soiled, just used, so it will have the other rats scent)
put it in the corners of the room, and close to where you suspect they come in.
if they smell that it's "another rats territory" this can encourage them to stay away.

I don't think you're going to catch it without some kind of trap. They have traps to capture animals alive. They are like cages with food in them. When the food is moved, the doors close.

Ask it very politely to leave. If that doesn't work, Magyver a trap using the pet carrier and some how capture it.

You can get a rodent trap at the grocery store or walmart or wherever. I have seen them. They crawl inside this thing and it shows you there is something in there and then you can take it dump it out somewhere. Glad to hear you didn't want to kill it. What a terrible death!
