What will happen if Pinocchio said, "My nose will grow now." ?

That's obviously a lie, so his nose will definitely grow. But if it did grow, then he's actually telling the truth and it would mean that his nose grew for no reason. I demand an explanation and 10 points for the BEST ANSWER.

This really depends on the time line.

Pinocchio...as a living boy...will have a nose that grows so long as he is living...and so the statement will be true...and it will grow at a regular pace like noses do.

But if this is something he said before he became a real boy...then we must determine if he was living or not as a wooden boy...if we say the wood was alive...then the statement is true...and the wood can grow at a regular pace.

It is only a paradoxical situation in the event that, as a wooden boy, Pinocchio was made from wood that was not alive...but not inanimate either.

That is not a lie because he is trying to determine the future when it has not happened yet, so nothing will happen. However if his nose has has never grown in the past then he would be lying. Its technically not a lie nor is it a truth more like trying to predetermine the possible future truth. If he did lie before saying "My nose will grow now" then technically it would not change the growing of the nose.

One of three things, and only one of these things must occur instantly if such a statement came from Pinocchio:

    1) It fails to grow, due to the fact that a) He is already a real boy and thus the statement has no validity, power or consequences. or b) Nothing happens because the loving skill of Geppetto combined with the power of the good fairy would prevent such a conundrum from happening

    2) Upon the speaking of this magic phrase, Pinocchio has evolved into a higher state of conciousness and thus becomes a real boy earlier than in the story.

    3) Something annoying to catastrophic happens, on the scale from Pinocchio getting a minor pain to a major agony, wood lice or termites invading other parts of his body, or worse, he catches afire either a little or burns entire, or worse yet, has a instantly painless and spectacular death by explosion comparable single stick of dynamite on up, to (worst case) the paradox is too great for the universe to bear and all creation is sucked into a super duper custom deluxe singularity and that's that, don't blame me it was your fault the universe had to die.....

On a personal note, that was a really cool question that really got me thinking so therefore I hope you have plenty of love, laughter and music in YOUR life, Mr. Philospher Dude.

It would grow after he said it. Because he said my nose will grow NOW and it wasn't growing at that exact moment that he said NOW, he was lying. When his nose grows a few brief seconds AFTER he has said that, he isn't telling the truth because at the time that he said it his nose wasn't growing.

    Wow.

    That sounds so confusing

You probably have no idea what i am talking about but i keep on seeing this question and it is annoying me (but in a good way) so i had to answer it. Even if it makes no sense.

His nose would be in a constant state of trying to grow and stay the same thus fixing his nose growing problem forever

    Only he knows.

There are a number of Pinocchios but they are NOT

going to put you `in the know` online.

You have to seek out `The Pinocchio Piano Service`...

    That`s the key.

    See the cunningly disguised club-name?

  • Let's say he said that at 10:45:06 am.His nose grew at 10:45:07 am.It won't grow back because he didn't tell the truth, he said his nose will grow at 10:45:06 and it didn't.

Umm it means Pinocchio can predict the future. Obviously.
