Quitting a job without another lined up?

Is it okay to quit a job that is making you miserable before finding another one? I have been at my company for almost 10 years and I've been there ever since I graduated from college. The pay and benefits are good, but it is making me crazy. I have been wanting to quit for some time now. I have a good amount of money saved up to last me quite some time while I look for a new job. Any advice from someone who has been in the same situation?

I understand that people are going to say find a new job first, but I would appreciate some other perspectives as well. Thank you.

Ok you been at your job for 10 years however have you continued your education after graduating from college for a new career/field or advancement in your current field? What degree do you hold i.e. bachelor or masters? I ask these questions as you must be aware there are millions of people out of work i.e. educated, experienced, etc. willing to accept any job and pay. It is risky in this environment to just quit a job and hope to find another job with i.e. good benefits and pay within six months or more. As an educator for the unemployed I teach people who have a PHD and no new job in the last year. Do you have at least six months saved up for i.e. rent or mortgage, car payments, car insurance, gas, utilities, car repairs, social activities etc.? Or are you living with family with little or no housing expenses? While you have been waiting to quit have you actively searched for another job? Why are you so unhappy at this job because leaving any finding another job might not be the answer to your unhappiness. Are there transfer opportunities at your current job? We learn that the grass is not always better on the other side in fact some people attempt to return to their former employer. Think about this carefully the ultimate decision is yours of course. Good Luck!!

Well you gotta think this through: If you're just going to go into a similar job for a similar company in the same field then why bother quitting?

I wouldn't say you need another job lined up before you quit (although it would be good), but you should have a plan before you resign.

  • I know you don't want to hear it, but I don't think it's wise to leave your job until you have another one. Only because, the economy is really awful, and you might not find anything for a while, resulting in you not having enough money as you'd be used to. I think try and stay put, and try really hard to find another job, but don't quit until you've found another one.

    Good luck!
