  • My best reference is unavailable?

I am looking for a new job and my best reference is about to be out of the country for about a month and will generally not be available for phone calls or email. I don't want to put my job search on hold until he gets back, but can I add a footnote to my reference list I provide that states this so they don't think that the person is ignoring them or doesn't want to provide a reference?

I was thinking about something like: Note: Mr. Smith will be traveling abroad during the month of September and generally will not be available until his return.

That way, they can still contact him when he gets back, but would not misinterpret a phone call that is not returned.

    Thanks!

  • Quitting job and moving without a new job lined up?

After nearly a decade at my current job, I've decided to move to a different state to be closer to my family. While being near my family is one of the reasons for moving, part of the reason is that there have been some changes the past year or so at work that I do not like. I really would like to start over somewhere else, closer to family. Will employers be suspicious of me leaving my old job and see it as a red flag?

  • Ethics course requirement for Texas CPA exam?

I currently live in Missouri, but I'm planning on moving to Texas later this year. I previously completed a Bachelor's degree in accounting and Master's degree from the University of Missouri. When I get to Texas, I would like to begin taking the CPA exam. I completed a 3 hour business ethics course as part of my undergraduate work. I was looking on the TSBPA website and I noticed the three semester hour course requirement and there was a list of very specific courses that meet this requirement. Am I going to have to enroll in a Texas university or college to take this course or will my previous course satisfy the requirement? If not, is there any other option for satisfying this requirement?

  • Quitting a job without another lined up?

Is it okay to quit a job that is making you miserable before finding another one? I have been at my company for almost 10 years and I've been there ever since I graduated from college. The pay and benefits are good, but it is making me crazy. I have been wanting to quit for some time now. I have a good amount of money saved up to last me quite some time while I look for a new job. Any advice from someone who has been in the same situation?

I understand that people are going to say find a new job first, but I would appreciate some other perspectives as well. Thank you.

  • Should I quit my job that is making me miserable?

I've been at the same company since I graduated from college nearly 10 years ago. I've done very well and have gotten several promotions over the years. It is a good job and I am well paid, but there have been some changes recently. There has been a lot of personnel change in our area and new management. I no longer feel that this company is a good cultural fit for me. I've always gotten along well with my managers and they have supported me in my success over the years, but I do not have the best relationship with my new boss. The job is making me totally miserable and unhappy with my life. I have a good amount of money saved up that should last a year. I would like resign, recharge, and find a new position. Thoughts? For anyone who has gone through this, your advice would be appreciated.

  • drywall screws going in crooked?

I am fixing some nail pops in my ceiling and I am adding drying screws near the pops for added support. The problem is that the screws keep going in crooked. I am holding the drill straight, but the screws are veering off course. How can I prevent this?

  • Ground wire came loose from fixture?

I just installed a new light fixture (chandelier). After installing it, I noticed the ground wire had come loose from the fixture. There was a little metal post sticking out of the top of the fixture where the ground wire had been attached. When I tried to push it back in, the post broke off. I just took the ground wire and wrapped it around the metal tube of the fixture. Is this OK? I figure as long as it is touching the metal of the fixture, it's ok.

  • Kohl's return policy question?

Kohl's says you can "return any item any time for any reason." What is stopping people from returning things that have just worn out? For example, if I bought a pair of shoes five years ago and they are worn out, according to the policy they can be returned.

  • co-worker is rude and gives dirty looks?

I try to be as nice as possible to my co-worker, but she just doesn't like me. When I talk to her, she typically gives me dirty looks, makes snotty remarks, or sometimes just ignores me. It causes me a lot of anxiety when I have to interact with her. What should I say when she does these things to me?

  • cancel a job interview?

I saw a job posting online, submitted my resume to the recruiter, and he scheduled me an interview with the company. After doing research on the company and talking to friends and family about the company, I know that this is not a company I would be comfortable working for. Is it wrong to call and cancel the interview after it has already been made? Will the recruiter think negatively of me and not offer me any adidtional interview opportunities?

  • hot water heat wire pierced?

I was changing the temperature of my electric hot water heater and when attaching the metal plate, it cut right through one of the red wires. It cut at the point where the wire goes straight upward into the heater. There is no give in the wire, so I can't use a wire nut to reconnect. Is there a way to fix? Thanks

  • swimming pool gate false imprisonment?

A condo pool has a locking gate that requires an access card. The gate system is programmed to not allow entry or exit after 9:00 p.m. or before 9:00 a.m. So, if you don't get out in time in the evening, you will be locked in all night. The pool hours are clearly posted and the residents have been informed of the operation of the gate. Are there any legal implications associated with this (e.g., false imprisonment)?

  • Drill bits keep breaking?

I have a stripped screw head and am trying to drill a hole in it so I can use a screw extractor. I've used a titanium and a cobalt drill bit, but both have broken. They don't seem to be making much of a hole. What am I doing wrong? What speed should I use?

  • Electrical wire in the way of exhaust fan?

I am replacing the exhaust fan in my bathroom. On the joist where I will be attaching the unit, there is a black electrical wire running along the joist. On the old fan, I think the wire either pinned between the joist and the box or sitting on the top of the box. The new fan has a taller height, so I don't think I can let it sit on the box. What should I do?
