Thoughts on the last of us ending SPOILER ALERT?

Well i just beat the game a few hours ago and the ending shocked me i was expecting joel to get infected kind if like the walking dead ending but he didnt want to lose ellie because she was like a daughter to him and didnt want to go through that again and i thought he was kinda crazy because the the vaccine for the cure was going to be made and joel totally just took it away and then lied to ellies face about it just seems crazy but love makes you do crazy things. But overall the game was freaking amazing and im not saying the ending was bad , it was acually pretty good just kind of a big twist anyone agree?

It's something a father would do, protect his child. Your right, love causes us to do crazy things, but when you think about it, humanity was lost 20 years ago. It's too damaged to have a vaccine and then everything will be ok. There are still the infected, bandits, cannibals, military etc you'd have to deal with.

So screw the world! His world had forsaken him. Those who were suppose to protect people killed his daughter. What does he owe to the world at this point? Nothing.

I expected something completely different. When it was revealed that Ellie would die with the surgery, my stomach just twisted and I felt like quitting and puking.

I was EXPECTING it that Joel and Ellie would both somehow end up dying, but Joel went and did something I didn't expect.

And you're right, he did take the cure away from humanity. It's like having the cure for cancer in your hands, but not giving it to anybody. Joel just had such love for Ellie that he didn't want to see her go.

I thought it was a fitting ending and a right ending, because we saw those two grow together and having a more connected relationship throughout the game.

Pretty much an amazing game and I can't wait to go back.

Great point. Didn't even consider that. Makes his decision bother me much less.

It was definitely a strong ending. While I tend to lean on the side that Joel was wrong and that his fear to lose Ellie like he did Sarah clouded his judgment. I personality can't blame him. Even if the fireflies were successful in creating a vaccine; A) how many people would it reach? The world was in ruin. To distribute enough doses of vaccine that would make a difference would be impossible. B) By the time the story took place, most people were either long gone fungi people, or living in Q-zones. Sure a few Hunters were out there but would vaccinating them really make a difference? Society was already long gone. C) Since the infected die naturally like any living creature. Humans could in a way "wait them out". All the living infected would die and spores would only remain. A simple gas mask can solve that problem when society eventually tries to rebuild itself........... With that said, when naughty dog put you in control of Ellie before the last cut scene I thought the player would slowly "loose control" of her. Much like how they explain a newly infected person begins to lose their control. I thought it would come out that Ellie only developed a resistance to the virus and was not fully imune making the process of turning much slower. Then seeing that Ellie turned shed attack Joel, Joel would kill her then turn the gun on himself and end the game with the two lying dead. I personally think making the gamer literally lose control would have left a longer lasting impression.

I thought it was really cool because it made you question whether or not what Joel did at the end was right, you can't really say it was good or bad because in a world like that there aren't too much morals.

I posted my thoughts on the ending, Joel's decision, and a few other things related to the end of the game on my blog if you want to give it a read. It's a bit long to post here in a comment.

    The game was AMAZZIIIINGGGG

I do feel Joel,I know what it feels like to lie to someone you care about but he did the lie to protect her and when I got to the ending I felt the same way as you (i literally cried) but then you have to think about he did it to protect her and so she wouldnt be hurt by him or feel betrayed. He didnt want to lose his second baby girl :)

I downloaded Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows game for free here: http://j.mp/1qXDZ1O

    it's a perfectly working link!

It is one of the most daring video game in which the player takes the role of Harry.

For me, it's the best game ever.

I dont see why your not happy. Joel starts as a sad man that does whatever to survive and doesnt really care about anyone. Ellie is lonely and has no friends or family and has a deep feeling of guilt for being immune. Ellie wants someone to trust and to know they will always be there. But she feels more guilty than lonely. When Joel realizes that she gives him a reason to be a good person and to live and be happy, he starts talking about the future. saying hell teach her to play guitar and to swim. She blows it off because she feels guilty and "NEEDS" to cure everyone to make up for all her friends dieing. Even though she is lonely and scared she NEEDS to complete her mission. He offers to just return to Tommys town but she refuses. And then they get to the fireflies who say she NEEDS to die. He says FIND SOMEONE ELSE. But Marlene just says no theirs no one else.(which is as dumb as saying a vaccine is impossible) Marlene doesnt give Ellie a choice. Even though Ellie probly would want to die (OUT OF GUILT. I mean they make it obvious SHE FEELS GUILTY AS HELL) Now its already been said in the game that they have tried cures and that they have failed in the past. Also it says that the infection took out 60% of the population. So that means theirs around 120,000,000 people in the U.S. LOTS OF POTENTIAL IMMUNE PEOPLE. Also its clear that the virus is killing FAR fewer people than the humans are. OK back to the Fireflies. Theirs recordings talking about the doctors testing on other patients and that it all failed. they tested on immune monkeys....NO CURE. Joel reverts to what he was without Ellie. A brutal survivalist. He saves Ellie. And in my opinion, he knows she would give herself up and he knows she doesnt deserve that and he needs her. I dont see it as him being selfish. He eased her guilty mind by lieing to her. She has lost everyone but Joel. Her best friend got infected and she made it and now shes "waiting for her turn". And in the end she says "Okay". Which to me is her trusting in Joel and letting go of her mission to redeem herself. But whatever maybe im just looking for a reason to love these two characters. The only way to know is to talk to the developers. But why would any of you want to fight through the game and at the end....after all the crap shes been through....just kill off Ellie for a "possible" vaccine? The final cutscene would be Joel putting a 45. through his own dome. Aww what a lovely ending. I loved every aspect of this game. the cutscenes and character interactions were like watching a movie. the story is amazing. dramatic and scary and sad and happy. And every time a had to fight people and infected I noticed myself tensing up and breathing slow. I felt like if i messed up im dead and this poor girls gonna get raped and ate or something. I dont see how anyone could so easily give up a core character like that. Would you just kill off your own child like that? I justify my words because if I was the doctor I wouldnt kill the kid. It would have to be someone who had lived their life already and they were ready. Otherwise "I" wouldnt do it. If I had a family member that was infected. I wouldnt expect someone else to kill their child for mine. Thats just me though.

I LOVED THE ENDING! You know why? Because it left enough room for a sequal! A sequal I constucted together that Neil shoul definetely consider.

Honestly, I kind of expected Ellie to not believe Joel when he lied, and then shoot him in the back or something.
