Don't sell yourself short. If you have a professional and mechanically superior, technological design that you believe is worthy of a major company to manufacture and sell, then apply for a design patent. The site listed is the how-to-do-it via the United States Patent Office - their info is FREE. When you research, there's more sites to view so you can choose what route to take. You own the design, so don't waste your design or your talents sending it off just to get rejected based on that you're inexperienced.. Gun manufacturing companies have multi-million $ contracts to fulfill government, online gun brokerages and mass channel retail store orders. According to NRAnews.com some models are back-logged 6 months so you have an opportunity to get into a strong market. Make your own brand, you could be the new Savage. good luck! :) P.S. : don't you watch "Sons of Guns" ?? Send an email to Will Hayden, owner of Red Jacket gun manufacturing - ask the man's opinion.

You can send them in how ever you want. They will not look at them. They will not buy the design from you, and if they later design a gun similar to yours, there would be all kinds of complications if they ever saw your design.

You can, however, unless you trade mark them they can just say "Thanks!" and use it without any compensation. If you're looking for a job with them, consider talking with their HR and bring a binder with some of your work.
