my wife is very ill and most likely will never work again can she collect social security?

At present she has been in the hospital in the surgery intensive car unit for 3 weeks now, has had part of her colon removed and has 3 areas in her body being drained of fluids and her stomach has been open but bandaged for three weeks and if she does live it will be a very long recovery and very possibly will never be able to work again

Yes, she can go on long term disability and collect social security. The social worker at the hospital can help you file the necessary papers, so ask to speak to the social worker on your next visit there.

Yes, if she is really ill, she would be eligible for Social Security. Just contact the local SSA office or even file on-line. I hear that lots of times, SSA will deny disability claims the first time you file, so don't give up, even if you need to hire a lawyer, The SSA $$ can be paid retroactively.

And if your wife is disabled, she may qualify for Medicare, too.

Yes, but first look into her work benefits. Does she have long term disability insurance through work or other sick leave benefits.
