what are the cleanest lizards to keep as pets?

My 8 year old wants a lizard as a pet. I've heard that they are dirty. Of course we'll get one from a pet store; what breed/species are most likely to be clean of germs that could get someone sick?

Reptiles are relatively clean. What people are most concern with is the Salmonella risk. And saying that there is no chance of this happening would be putting you at risk. But most Salmonella cases have occurred with pet reptiles caught from the wild. The chances of it happening with a domesticated reptile is slim to none. You still want to protect yourself by washing your hands after holding them.

Keep in mind because reptiles are cold blooded they require special care including lighting.

All day basking reptiles require a heat bulb and UVB lighting. The UVB cannot be skipped. And they eat live insects. So you will be getting live crickets form your petshop at least once a week and dusting their food with calcium.

    Now to the reptiles.

A look but not hold lizard that is easy to care for would be anoles. You can have a nice 10 gallon tank with a few green anoles, bahaman anoles and long tailed lizards. All you would need to do is get the lighting and feed water them with the occasional bedding change. But as stated they are more of a look only reptiles.

In my opinion because I'm biased. Any one who is willing to put in a little effort, you cannot go wrong with the Bearded Dragons. When they get older they are calm fairly large and enjoy being handled. I know several young kids that have them and they adore them as much as I do. They require a fairly large cage a 40+gallon long tank, the lighting and lots of food if you get a baby. When they get older they will eat salads as well.

Another fun beginner lizard is a Leopard Gecko. They also don't require the lighting like day baskets do. They are nocturnal and are more active early morning and evening. They really just need a heating pad and a night heat lamp. They get about 6-8 inches big and can be tamed fairly easily and handle well.

Here are some sites to check out on each suggestions.

A crested gecko would be a great starter pet, I have one at my fathers house, you only have to clean their tank once every 6 months, so that says a lot, they are very clean animals, the only thing to be careful about is that sometimes they leap if your holding them, but don't worry if they fall on the floor they won't get hurt, they probley won't even run away they will just sit there, they have no smell whatsoever and they don't bite, they are very easy to care for and fun to play with, we'll I hope this helped, and good luck finding a pet :)

Leopard geckos are great beginner pets that love to be handled and many of my family members and friends, along with myself have one and no one has ever gotten sick. Most reptiles that are in captivity are relatively germ free if from a reliable source. Also, it might be good to order online also, but reliable pet stores are fine too. Just make sure you read about them and do your research before going out and buying a pet.

Leopard geckos are clean pets to have they use only one corner of the vivarium and they rarely carry any harmfull diseases so they are the great way to go.
