  • Will granite retain cold longer, if it is kept in the fridge longer?

I bought a chinchiller at Petsmart ((http://www.petsmart.com/small-pet/toys-habitat-acc... which is a thin granite slab for my chinchilla to rest on when it is warm.

My question is---does it matter how long I put the slab in the refrigerator? If I keep it in for 10 hours before putting it in his cage, will it retain the cold longer, than if I were to just put it in for 1 hour?

  • If I freeze a half gallon of milk (in a traditional paper container), will it expand so much that it will burst out?

If I freeze a half gallon of milk (in a traditional paper container), will it expand so much that it will burst out? Our fridge is too crowded, so I'm saving some room.

  • What plastic bottle can I re-fill for mouthwash?

I use a small travel size bottle of mouthwash when at work, and refill it with Listerine (at home) when it gets low. That system is ok, because I don't use it all that often, and I put it in a carrying case so it needs to be pretty small. I just talked to someone who said that plastic bottles aren't always safe to re-use. I figured that since this was originally designed to hold mouthwash, that refilling and using it would be ok.

The recycle triangle at the bottom has a 1 inside it.

Is this safe to refill with mouthwash? If not, is there another plastic number that I should use? Or should I just buy them new and recycle them when they get empty, and then buy another new bottle?

  • How long to wait to sleep on memory foam?

We just got memory foam mattresses today. Minutes ago, I opened it up from the duffel bag, and one of them looked already expanded. The second one, as soon as I cut open the bag, I could hear the air pressure, and it started expanding. Now, some 30 minutes later, both have expanded to their full 6 inches in height.

The directions say to wait 48 hours, but this seems excessive. Is it ok to sleep on them as long as they have expanded?

  • How critical is it that critical level line on fill valve is an inch higher than top of overflow pipe?

I'm installing a fluidmaster 404LGR and the instructions say to make sure that the critical level line on the fill valve is an inch higher than the top of the overflow pipe on the flush valve. This would make the top of that pipe sit rather low in the tank.

Can I just ignore the critical level line, and keep the top of the overflow pipe fairly high up in the tank (a good inch is what the instructions recommend)? What benefit would having the top of the pipe stay lower than the critical level line?

  • Why does my security door have key access on both sides?

Its time to change the locks in this house, and I'm wondering how I should change my security door. To open it, from either side, you need to use a key (I know this is the same setup in my parents house as well). The solid wood door right behind it opens from the inside by merely turning a bolt (no key required). I'm wondering why a security door would require a key to get out. I don't see how this could be a safety feature, and quite possibly, in the event of a fire, delay getting out of the house.

Is there a good reason for me to install a new lock on a security door, with key access on both sides?

  • Does alcohol dissipate after container is opened?

I have a cleaning solution for my electric razor that has alcohol in it, and the instructions say to throw it away after a few weeks, because the alcohol will dissipate.

I'm wondering if this is true, or simply a ploy to get me to buy more of their product. And if it is true, could I simply pour in some rubbing alcohol into the solution, and continue to use it after the few weeks are up?

  • Serious question: how is a bowl of dry roasted peanuts and dried fruit any better than ice cream?

Am I really doing anything positive by foregoing the ice cream? The dried fruit has sugar on it, and the peanuts have a fair amount of fat. How is this healthier than indulging in some much tastier ice cream (assuming that the number of calories is the same)?

I just looked on nutritiondata.self.com, and 1/2 cup of chocolate ice cream has 140 calories; 1/2 cup of dry roasted mixed nuts as 400 calories!

  • How to clean white stuff from bottom of beaker?

Sorry, don't know what the beaker held, but there is a lot of white stuff at the bottom. Soaking it with water + bleach solution didn't help much.

    Any other suggestions?

  • what are the cleanest lizards to keep as pets?

My 8 year old wants a lizard as a pet. I've heard that they are dirty. Of course we'll get one from a pet store; what breed/species are most likely to be clean of germs that could get someone sick?

  • Am I saving energy by letting coffee cool down first, before putting it in the refrigerator?

Sometimes when I make iced coffee, I let it sit after brewing, to cool down before putting it in the refrigerator. But I think I've heard somewhere, that it doesn't take any more energy to cool down hot liquids in the refrigerator, than it does to keep them cool--implying that putting hot coffee in the refrigerator wouldn't take up any more energy than waiting for it to cool down.

Am I saving energy by letting coffee cool down first, before putting it in the refrigerator?

  • Specs on drill chucks?

I am looking for a drill with a keyless chuck. The primary reason why the drills ($40-80 range) I am looking at get low reviews, is because of the bits slipping from the chucks.

Are there specs at all that allow a comparison of the chucks? Or is it simply that the folks who have this problem are using them on more difficult jobs? Or that there are lemons of each model floating around, and they were just unlucky enough to get one? Or is it simply that you get what you pay for?

  • Mixing power drill with extension cord?

I am looking at buying a 100 ft extension cord (16/3), which I believe has a 10 amp maximum and 125 volts, as well as a power drill. Now if the power drill says 5.2 amp, the cord can handle the drill, correct? I read in reviews that this extension cord wasn't meant for heavy duty use, and I'm not sure if my power drill would be too much for it.

  • Can I use quikrete cement around older cement?

I have a 4x4 wood fence post that has cement around it, but it got knocked over. The cement is still solid, although I'll have to put in more cement (with rebar this time). Will this new cement bond with the old? Or will I have to knock out the old cement?

    http://www.quikrete.com/ProductLines/FastSettingCo... is the product

  • What liquid would be best to avoid mold?

What liquid would be best to avoid mold?

My daughter has a cup that has glitter and small plastic toys floating in a liquid, in between the inside and outside plastic layers of the cup. It broke today, and I'd like to glue the two layers back together. I'd like to get the toys to float in a liquid, but am not sure what to use. If I simply use water, would it be likely that mold would grow? What liquid would be best to use--rubbing alcohol? It should be something that would not wear away the glue that I'll use.

  • Is it unsanitary to wear other peoples' shoes?

Are there skin conditions (fungus, whatever) that can be passed on by wearing shoes that have been worn by others before? I'm not talking about people trading shoes right then and there, but simply wearing someone else's shoes that have been in a closet for a while.
