How can they steal "Big Brother is Watching You"?
Okay, I might be wrong in this, but I recently saw an advertisement for the show Big Brother, and the woman stated the infamous quote "Big Brother is watching you!" And I thought it a bit strange that they could take that from George Orwell's novel and use it like that?
But what bothers me even more is that in my grade 10 Social Studies class, we were doing current events, and I brought up the deal about the NSA and Edward Snowden, and I made a joke ending it with the the Big Brother quote ... The problem is that nobody understood what I really meant as a reference to 1984, but instead thought I was talking about some silly reality show.
Are they doing this on purpose? Are they trying to hide the real meaning of the quote to trick the masses into thinking its just a reality show gag?
Sorry if I sound absurd ... It's just something I've been thinking about for a while.
Any well thought out opinions will be greatly appreciated!

You are not being absurd, you're correct.
But it's not a conspiracy, it's just that people are ignorant dimwits.
Since I assume you've read the book, you should see all sorts of things from there going on here.
But notice, it's not the government (Party) doing it, it's us doing it to ourselves.
Newspeak, Double Think, Two Minutes Hate, all of those things are a reality today.
I suggest getting your class to read the book. Get individuals to read it at least.
Fahrenheit 451 as well.
